Confirmed with Link: NYR/VAN: Carson Soucy for 3rd Round Pick from VGK trade

I was heavily pro Vaak when the trade happened and Borgen, honestly, has been "fine".

he's a good #5. that's fine. he's good at what he does and has his strengths. his pair with KAM is fine. I find him hardly worth a massive victory lap as a massive win for Drury. He traded for a better than average bottom pair D and that's what he got.

Soucy is just another guy that's not going to address any major issue on this defense and we will "flip for assets" next year when we could've just, not bothered?

you also can't act like a lot of the anxiety isn't coming from the fact that Soucy, most definitely (i'm willing to be wrong but I don't see it), is not here to play on the bottom pair. our left side is absolutely ripe for an "upgrade".
He’s not going to be.

If someone wants to sell me on the rebound factor, fine. I can buy that there is bounce back potential for him in a third pair role.

That isn’t happening with this staff. That won’t happen if he’s playing next to Fox either and is not a long term or even an adequate one. Lavi already has him
Penciled in next to Fox.
Right, this is where all of the animus comes from.

Any time this discussion comes up, somebody will bring up Jack Johnson on Colorado or something similar and it's like, ok but that guy barely played.

You can have these guys play somewhere from #4-6.

That's not what we're gonna do. This has Fox's partner written all over it.

This team just keeps trying the Leetch-Beukeboom formula over and over again because it worked once thirty years ago.

They absolutely refuse to get any more than one puck-moving defenseman, and they insist on playing that guy with nothing but oafs.

I'm not really interested in Soucy-Borgen at all. Borgen has been good with Miller who can move the puck a bit. They should stick with it. Or upgrade on Miller for that spot and run Miller-Fox. They need another good top 4 D, not another body that they're gonna try to play above his station.

Precipitous drop. Very good numbers with Seattle however

Yeah I mean I understand those that don't like the trade on principle. That's fine.

But there's a whole bunch of people in here acting like babies who don't know a goddamn thing about Carson Soucy. This is a guy who has spent his whole career in Minnesota and on the West Coast and 90% of people on our board literally know nothing about him, and yet they'll piss and moan because someone on Twitter said he's shit and posted a chart. Like you said, same thing we went through with Borgen.

I know some people actually do know the player and I'm not discounting that, but I think we all understand at this point that most people on sports message boards don't know a f***ing thing about whatever their current outrage is.
im not angry because i know he's bad (necessarily), im angry because i'm sick of trading assets for guys who i don't know are GOOD. not big, not veteran. Good play driving hockey players.

I also don't want it to be lost that Soucy historically has been a microstats darling. The deep divers that track literal shifts have liked him for a long time (not this year). He does have something to rebound to and i'm not losing sleep over a 3rd round pick, but he's coming here immediately to play over his head right now. I think it's reasonable to find that hard to swallow considering Lindgren got two years of rope being stapled to Fox and he has half the tools Soucy does.
He was a microstat darling for one season in. 22-23. Every other season has been bad to terrible. Really bad at exiting the defensive zone. Bad in the offensive zone. Good at defending the blue line. I saw more promising data from Borgen before he was acquired.

I will acknowledge that every defenseman we've brought in is better than Lindgren (by a lot), and going from fantasy camp to actual NHL players who are just playing too much maybe is not nothing.

But also, that's not where I would put the bar.

This blows. Burned a draft pick for nothing.

Worse yet, when everyone's healthy, they'll sit CDH who is better at everything.

They didn't burn a pick. If he doesn't work out they can just trade him at the deadline next year and get a 3rd back. Basically get a free look at him for a year in exchange for pushing back the draft pick by a year and 20ish spots.

Different kind of d men but this tells me either another d man is going out or fox isn't coming back anytime soon/until playoffs or next season. Soucy is the new #7 unless there is another deal coming. Do you normally pay a 3rd for a #7/8 on your depth chart?
Looks like jones is back to being #7

Decent acquisition, as I've said before Jones won't be here past this season, they'll either trade him or keep him for depth this season
