To NYR:
Luca Sbisa
Derek Dorsett

Cap In: 6.25M
Cap Out: 6.45M

To TOR:
Dan Girardi (500k retained)
NYR 2nd round pick in 2018
VAN 4th round pick

Cap In: 5M
Cap Out: 5.25M

To VAN:
Joffrey Lupul
Tanner Glass

Cap In: 6.7M
Cap Out: 6.25M

Why the Rangers do this? They free up a protection slot and free up cap space in every year of Girardi's deal, except year 2, where they lose 1.25M in cap space. Small price to pay along with a 3rd for all the benefits received.

Why Toronto does this? They get rid of their worst contract but receive a similar one thats 2 years longer at a position they need (RD). For taking on an additional 2 years of a 5M contract, they pick up a couple picks. They also don't need to protect Girardi as its up to the Leafs if they want to honour that clause. So there is a slim chance Girardi gets claimed to meet the cap floor by Vegas. If that happens, Toronto just picked up a 2nd round pick and received slim cap savings for this upcoming season for doing NYR a favour.

Why Vancouver does this? They get a reclamation project in Lupul. They lose 500k in cap space this season, but save cap space the following 2 seasons as Glass is a gone after this season and Lupul the season after. The cost of that is a 4th round pick.

Horrible for the Canucks. No thank you.

Great insight there, care to explain?

The Canucks lose 500k in cap space this season, gain 1M for the following season, and 2.65M the season after that. Canucks come out overall with 3.15M in cap savings total and it costs only a 4th round pick.

Nobody is taking Girardi.

Not even if you attached a first+. That's the worst contract in the league.

Considering what Matt Martin recently got, I find Dorsett's contract is more palatable. I don't think Canucks would have trouble finding a suitor for him, if they wanted to trade him. Which is why this proposal does not work from van's pov.

no its not.

being traded doesn't invalidate an NMC that has already started.

So the Canucks lose two players who can at least play in the NHL on a semi to regular basis for a player who might play a game again but is more likely to miss the season than he is to play a full one and an over paid tweener who doesn't belong in the NHL.
Where is the incentive here? Why not just cap shuffle with rangers leafs only

After seeing Girardi's advanced stats last season which were last in some categories out of EVERY d-man in the league.

This looks terrible for Toronto

Girardi is on par with Dustin Brown in my opinion.

hmmm so the leafs take on 4 years of girardi's brutal contract, and then have to expose connor carrick next year and protect girardi to grab a 2nd and 4th when they have a million picks the next few years.

oh and Girardi is still on the books when Nylander,Matthews, and Marner all need new deals? just terrible

marc savards 4m cap hit just got moved, with a 2nd to sweeten the pot.

Girardi's 4 years at 5+ million would cost a lot more to move
(IE 1st rd picks, Buchnevich,Skei etc as pieces of interest)

Leafs fans stop reading at Girardi.

Absolutely no chance in hell. He, Clarkson and Dustin Brown are the Unholy Trinity of Lousy Contracts.

Leafs don't add two more years of a crap contract and give up a protection slot for Carrick just to get a couple of picks (we have enough of those).

Vancouver also makes their cap worse next year when it matters more for them.

Bad deal all around. Maybe the Rangers can move Girardi to LA for Brown but that would be about it.

Nobody is taking Dan Girardi, would rather sign Luke Schenn for a year or two if we wanted a pylon on the back end

What in the world...

Why are we taking a 4 year 5.5M Girardi? Oh I'm sorry, you retained 500k... that makes it OK.

I'll keep Lupul and his 2 years, no matter how many 2nd rounders you throw my way.

I can't speak for the other fans but the Leafs have 2 years of Lupul left.
We aren't trading that for more years of Girardi (not for those draft picks). We will just wait Lupul out.

The rangers are not giving up their two mostly highly touted prospects considering they haven't had a first Rd pick in seemingly forever.

The Leafs taking on Girardi is like me eating a full jar of mayonnaise. It looks awful, it's gross, and it's probably going to slowly kill me over the next four years.
