Wow Drury makes a move on a Friday afternoon in mid July. I figured he’d be slinging pizzas or playing golf.

It isn't.

Would you rather have Harpur as your 7?

Rather give Mancini, Scanlin or even Robertson a look. Another small dman is not what the Rangers need. A small dman that brings no offense and isn't physical and doesn't play good defense doesn't really help.

Mancini has like 8 games of pro experience. He’s better served getting regular minutes in Hartford.

The other 2 are worse options.

They can still get a look. This is a two way league minimum contract that doesn't hurt the Rangers in any way and adds depth. There's nothing negative about it. He could spend the entire year in the AHL and it wouldn't matter.

As far as Robertson goes - he's a profound disappointment and if the Rangers depth on D weren't such an issue I don't think they would've re-signed him. Mancini is 21 and not NHL ready and Scanlin is 25 having played exactly 1 NHL game. These aren't the whose who of defense prospects.

You never have enough D. We've been incredibly lucky over the last few years with only a few injuries. Some years teams are totally devastated by the injuries to their D corp. Would like Robertson to get a shot but it seems obvious to me that the Rangers have not seen enough progress for him to get a look. They've made mistakes before, as with Ryan Graves, who at least became a serviceable NHL D for a few years after the Rangers jettisoned him. Who knows? Maybe in the middle of the season, we'll be happy to have an experienced, if marginal, NHL D like Rudwedel.

This is a waste of a signing

no offense, but IMHO you're seeing this a bit cockeyed
signing a proven 7th/8th for a league-minimum 2-way seems to have 0 downside

The kids will get their chances as they are earned and available.

NYR have been remarkably healthy last ~5 years compared to many other teams;
Contenders need depth. Most teams have had recent stretches missing ~2 of top ~5 dmen.
NHL hockey isn't video games, rosters need depth beyond the 18 skaters you dress on opening night.

And if a kid takes his job, and he really is not needed,
then NYR can get a pick back for a rental,
rather than so many recent moves being in the opposite direction.

We all love the kids,
but only tanking teams, like last year's San Jose,
reserve a roster spot, all season long, for an unproven guy (like Emberson)

and since i feared they were considering a pricier guy, like Kylington (if they moved Trouba),
this almost even makes me happy 8^)

Never know when you need someone to step in. We had Jones for that last season and he's moving into the everyday lineup.

It's good to have a veteran in that role too. He knows how to keep himself prepared while not getting ice time and while wanting to play, won't make a stink about it.

Can PK, so he has value defensively there. Hard worker too, which is always important to have around for younger guys looking to crack the roster.
