Kakko to Kaliyev is a sweet upgrade

They were taken in the same draft. Kakko has played 140 more games and has not been a minus plus/minus since his rookie year. He is now playing on the Kraken's top line.

Going back to his days with the USA U20 team Kaliyev was a big, lumbering skater whose best asset was his shot.

They are not close to the same player.

For those interested, this cost New York $56,250, paid to Los Angeles and not counted against the cap.

Players claimed this season: 21
Total compensation: $608,625
Can you elaborate on this? Didn't know you pay the team you claimed a player from.

How the mighty have fallen. Rangers on the cusp last year with their quest for the cup. Loaded with offensive, defensive talent plus solid netminder that steps up in the post season. Now, acquiring a waiver dive. Who knows, worth a shot I guess.

Let's see one of the best play making wingers for a long time, 50 goal scorer power winger, 40 goal sniper center, plus long time vet patrolling other center spot that wins tons of draws, #1 overall pick starting to bloom to name a few offensive weapons. Not to mention Norris trophy offensive defenseman. Yes, loaded.

Correct. He has also significantly declined this year.
50 goal scorer power winger,
That was three years ago. He's about to turn 34 and his back is made out of pudding at this point.
40 goal sniper center,
The last time Zibanejad scored 40 goals was five years ago, and that's also arguably the last time he was effective at even strength. His shooting rate has plummeted this year and his one of the least effective regular top six centers in the NHL.

Sure.

Lafreniere is on pace for 46 points.

Yes.

So to summarize, the Rangers have an elite winger and an elite defensemen both having down years, a good 2C, fair enough, probably the worst 1C in the NHL, a decrepit Chris Kreider who is in and out of the lineup because he can barely move, a 45-point JAG who isn't particuarly good at anything (but hey he went 1st overall!), and like two NHL defensemen.

And like, yeah, it would be one thing if everyone just hit a wall, but Rangers fans have been warning about this house of cards roster since 2022, that always lacked depth, and was predicated on good but not gamebreaking talent, all of them in their late primes, and most of them with injury history.

Still, everyone acts surprised because "the roster looks good on paper!" except it doesn't if you look at stats and ignore name recognition.

Yeah, you are sort of "buying" the contract from the other team, and each player's waiver price is calculated based on their experience, with the price going down each year.

It's essentially a small compensation to the original club for developing the player they just lost on waivers.

First thought was "Ooh, you..", but then I got to the point where this was a serious post.

Not in Philly
Maybe you missed the part where Kakko shot off his mouth and pretty much made himself persona non grata in New York.

That trade had more to do with team discipline and morale than anything else. It had to be dealt with then and there.

Thats part of the equation as well.
Nah didn't miss. For NYR management it's more like FAFO thing. Shouldn't be surprised for what Kakko did when you mistreat your talent pool.

Is this a recent cba thing?
