I guess we'll just agree to disagree that potentially picking up a 40 point player on waivers is good, especially when much of that production came from a depth slot and limited minutes.
What is the lowdown on Kaliyev the last few years and how likely is it that you think he’ll succeed on a new team?

It seems like we never make these types of waiver claims. Maybe we do and now we just are finally getting the player because we’re finally bad and being bad pays in the waiver claim order.

I’m intrigued. Can’t remember the last really successful waiver claim we’ve had.

I think he can become a 20 G, 20 A guy. He had the second-best shot of the 2019 draft after Caufield. He has some underrated vision and can make some good plays.

He has compete issues though. Doesn't do the dirty work. His quality of shots went down as he seemingly lost confidence.

Low risk, medium reward type.

I think what you are saying is that he missed all the time last season v. not getting quality shots. If so, this is 100% what happened. His best attribute is his shot and he just began shanking every good opportunity. Stick starts to be gripped too tightly, he gets in his own head etc.

Funny thing is that he still found his way to be in a position to miss a good opportunity whereas many Kings players can't even get a chance to miss a good opportunity.

Toffoli put together a worse season in 2019 than Kaliyev ever has. Career worst shooting percentage on a total shot amount that is still one of the highest of his career. He gets more rope than Kaliyev since he's proven it before, but Kaliyev's 2024 reminded me of Toffoli's 2019. The difference, amongst other things, is that Toffoli is a good locker room guy whereas Kaliyev just doesn't seem to fit in.

I love AK's skillset. At worse, he is a 20 goal guy on a lottery team. The skill is NHL contract worthy and I hope he turns it around but I do feel he is destined to play overseas.

I'm still not used to this new Rangers reality. I went "damn Rangers? Took a while for teams to claim him".

Nope, Rangers are 26th in the league, 7th pick.
The team that got the 2nd and 1st overall draft picks in 2019 and 2020?

It hasn’t been that long

2019 they were bad. In 2020, had the draft been done in reverse standings order at the time of the Covid shut down, they would’ve picked 16th. As it was, the 1OA pick was awarded to the team in the 12th position. Then the Rangers won the lottery for the right to be that team.

I think a lot of people who think Kaliyev is a good pickup also believed that Daniel Sprong was a good pickup for Vancouver.

Is Kaliyev an upgrade to Kappo Kakko? No. If Kaliyev isn’t providing second unit PP scoring, he’s gives you nothing. I’ll bet that he puts up some numbers right away with the NYR, but eventually ends up back on waivers. Sprong and Kaliyev are very similar.

People will ultimately blame the coaching, but he’s not a guy that you can rely on in all situations.

I'm honestly shocked he wasn't dealt to Tampa in the Jeannot trade.

Kaliyev seemed like a good player, just didn't workout in LA. I do wonder if he has the same case of bitch-itis a lot of younger players seem to have these days, if that's the reason he never got much of an opportunity in LA.

So basically Drury traded 2019 top pick for a lesser one.
Maybe you missed the part where Kakko shot off his mouth and pretty much made himself persona non grata in New York.

That trade had more to do with team discipline and morale than anything else. It had to be dealt with then and there.

Thats part of the equation as well.

I forgot about the second part.
Double lottery.

More like a one-dimensional player that had a hard time proving his worth in a trap system.
Blake also really doesn't like him (this was clear from Blake's summer presser).
Kaliyev should do better elsewhere.
