GDT: NYR Player Development Camp Info

didnt Kantor injure his ankle also?

re: Tambo give him 3 or 4 years in North Dakota and then see what you have.. project with some skilled upside.

non tendering Niemi, and Palmeri has created some space to pick up some prospects..

I think a quote from Moneyball really applies to the later round picks. They talked about tools and how a 5 tool player is rare(most top 5 picks would be considered 5-tool). Most kids are 1-2 tool players and they look to develop another once in the system.

Seems like thats what we have with these later round guys. They have 1-2 solid tools and the Rangers organization is hoping they can develop another 1 to make these guys NHL caliber players.

Good stuff.

IMO, mental aspect is huge. If they have the work ethic to improve they should.

Granted I don't know as much about our picks this year, I just didn't pay as much attention as normal, didn't have the spare time like in years past.

I at least hope they tried, this was a good draft to do that in, especially with the three 3rds. Zach Sanford was the guy I would have try to move up for.

Yea, that's why i was complaining on Sunday. I guess we won't ever know if they actually tried, because how often does that info come out. But it's frustrating that there was some movement, and we couldn't move up.

I have a feeling this summer is just going to be uneventful. The only way to improve this roster now is via trade. And if we are unwilling to move Del Zotto or Staal (Del Zotto preferably) I don't see how we can improve other than inserting kids with high upside in the bottom six so we can have more skill and speed.

What is frustrating is the last two playoff runs, our opposition's bottom six really was the difference maker. We need to infuse speed and skill down there so we can match up.

Eh, I like him. Wasn't my favorite pick to make. But the potential is there.

The kid in your avatar has a good amount of upside. I wonder why some of these kids dropped so far. Duclair and Buchnevich have a good amount of skill.

Can't complain with our picks being they were so late.

Really wish we could have moved up to grab a higher potential kid in the second or late first.

True, I guess it's more that I didn't like the puck and tire of the bloodlines picks.

As far as Duclair dropping I think it had to do with an ankle injury that made him a little hesitant to go to the dirty areas, was a perimeter player for a bit until he hit comfortable and lost the fear of injury. Point total also dropped due to that and quality of line mates.

He's got a few tools namely his skating, decent shot and passing, more of a finisher, good puck skills, and IMHO is underrated defensively. The last one is less an issue of being able to play defensively and more a lack of willingness or consistency to do so. He's 17, and could play a complete game just has to mature and do it night in night out like a lot of these kids.

Tambellini is more of a perimeter player by most accounts, and needs to get the willingness to go to dirty areas.

Which is why I like Duclair more, easier to get a kid to do something he's already fairly good at (defensive play) on a consistent basis, other than adding a new element to their game.

Buch was one of only 8 Russians drafted, really think the "Russian factor" played a role in this draft.

Same here. Dont know much either.

From what I've taken, Duclair has great speed/skating, but his hockey IQ isn't the best.

Seems like Tambo has the skill but when he has to go against bigger guys he gets thrown around. Seems like for him its about filling out and not having his skill plateau where it is now.

Don't know much about the rest.

Clark said they tried to move up and even add a pick and move back, but that teams held out and it just so happens that someone they were targeting would still be available so they didn't make the trade the Rangers wanted.

Also said teams offered to help them by taking a roster player for a second but that they didn't have any players they wanted to give up for a second.

At least he is here in camp now. So the Russian thing may not be an issue with him.

I like that Gordie compared him to Cherepanov. Who was my favorite prospect the Rangers had since Savard. So, hopefully this kid booms.

and not sign players that are 33+ to be 4th liners because here it never works out.. let guys like Lindberg, Mashinter, Yogan, get a real shot on the 4th line.... Miller Thomas Fast should be given a look on the 3rd line.... dump waste of space players like Powe Pyatt Asham.... their is a reason Powe scored 0 pts in 34 games.. players from the Whale could have done that with a much less cap hit...

Would love to see th Swedish line as a 4th line, Hags, Lindberg, Fast. All very good skaters, Lindberg and hags are good defensively. And all three are threats offensively

The Rangers are in a unique situation compared to all but 5 other teams, original six has an allure.

They also don't pressure players to come over, they tell them to put the work in and they'll get a shot. So Buch can go do his thing and when his contract is getting close to expire he'll have an opportunity if he wants. I think it's similar to the idea that if you ignore a girl you like she'll like you more lol.

I like what the Rangers did in this draft, took guys who may have had some issue that damaged their stock. Duclair's injury, Skapski also was injured, five months. His team bus went into the ditch and his face was mangled. Was 16 in his first season and while his stats weren't great they improved in his 2nd year when he had more responsibility which is a good sign. Buch and the Russian factor/overblown personality issues.

So why did Tolchinsky want undrafted? From what I have read about him it's just doesn't make any sense to me. Must be something else than just his size.

heres what i know about tolchinsky. ive been interested in him since he was 14 yrs old and since his days playing for cska krasnaya armiya in the mhl.

first off he wasnt a combine invitee. thats bad. also nhl central scouting rated him much lower than the other scouting agencies. thats bad. lastly, his outside shot is fairly weak. he needs to develop more strength there. bad again.

there are big concerns about his size and lack of muscle. hes slight and small. scouts were very concerned about his ability to be pro player. hes 5'8 maybe 160 and struggles to keep weight.

http://www.saultstar.com/2013/07/01/tolchinsky-bypassed-as-dempsey-is-drafted

unlike a guy like tarasenko, who may not be tall, hes still built like a tank with thick limbs and a thick chest. hes got a low center and very developed torso/upper body.

tolchinsky has been on the radar for awhile as hes a magican with the pill. hes like a water bug. he has unquestionable work ethic and from all reports is a really good kid.

keep an eye on this kid. hes determined and motivated. hes just too damn small. :shakehead

were he 6ft 200 lbs, he would have been a 1st rounder.

oh and i am NOT a fan of the tambellini pick at all

I agree ,, would love to see Mash, Yogan, develop on a fourth line. Powe was a big disappointment, Pyatt also,, Asham provided some toughness and an occaisonal goal at least. I would prefer to see Lindberg on a line that is a little more skilled than bangers. Save some capspace. I like Boyles work ethic but if we could get something for him , like a Right side D man with some offensive skills , go for it.

Tough to throw those 3 on the 4th line and get 4th line minutes, especially Hags.

Understand AV likes to roll 4, but if he doesn't those guys should be a touch higher.

Well ideally they would be a 3rd line. But two of them have never played NHL before, and Hags will be returning from surgery. It's not a terrible place to start them.

Gotcha. But if that's the case, why would we bring him to our prospects camp if he isn't already our property and we can't sign him? Seems like a waste of an invite, no?

I believe he can be signed before the start of next season. If not, he goes back in the draft.

were he 6ft 200 lbs, he would have been a 1st rounder.

I'll go a step further. Were he that size, he'd of had a better year points-wise in the OHL and would have been contending for the #1 overall pick. The problem is he's unbelievably tiny. And it legitimately effects his ability to be a difference maker.

I actually think he's around 5'6" 150. He does not look 5'7" and doesn't seem an ounce above 150.

I would love to sign the kid, though. I hope they can/do. The talent he has is unbelievable. As offda says, he's been on the radar of people since he became a teenager. He just never freaking grew!!!!

He may be a late bloomer, unless it's genetic and he comes from a family of garden gnomes there is nothing saying he can't get taller. He's probably got a high metabolism which keeps him from building weight, which will also slow down as he gets older and there are things he can do to combat it, unless you're me, and it takes you until you're 27 to start putting on weight without an insane amount of work lol.

thats highly debatable

The context of the statement is; If McIlrath is ready to make a legit push to be part of the NHL roster this year, then he should be head and shoulders above everyone else at this camp.

Not a statement that he IS the best player in camp, just that if he is ready to be a NHL regular then he SHOULD be the best player in camp at this point. If he's not, well then he needs more development

e: I guess this was already addressed!

I am surprised so many people are down on Tambellini. I am just going to agree to disagree there.

Yeah same here.

I'm not blown away by the pick, but the kid seems to be extremely solid in just about every area. Good skater, nice shot, decent size (6'2'' at 18) and by all accounts, has solid hockey sense.

The major knock on him is that he's a bean pole, but he's going to a great hockey school where he'll easily put on 15-20 lbs of mass.

Again, this kid won't light up the league, but I really don't see much drawback here. Maybe he would have been there 10-15 picks later, but if they like him, they like him.
