Starting to see a trend here with D men who can skate.
McD, Moore, picking Skjei, and now Klein? Not sure what to think about it, but our D is typically strong overall so maybe the coaches are onto something.

But why not keep Girardi too? Girardi is that Seidenberg. We need a strong defense if we want to play an uptempo speed game. Klein gives us so much balance.

Thank god we got Klein and not Franson.

Girardi is better than Seidenberg.

But don't get me wrong, I'd rather keep Girardi... I was more thinking about the need to replace him if we dealt him or lost him.

I think this may be the biggest misnomers about this team.

Which part? That they typically have a strong D?
They're ranked 12th right now I believe in goals allowed, similar position last year, and 3rd the year before that. It's not all Hank.

They're one of the better groups of D men in the league for sure.

Well it's much, much worse than the 'inefficient' Michael Del Zotto.

That won't fit with the agenda here though.

No, it's definitely not. I've already seen some of it posted. He had some of the toughest zone starts and quality of competition in the league the last few years. I was just hoping someone who actually posts those kinds of stats regularly and knows what kind of categories to look at would share a more thorough look.

Kevin Klein will be No. 8 on your scorecard.

Joining Darrol Powe, Brandon Prust, Marek Malik, Pat Flatley, Michal Grosek, Walt Poddubny, Robbie Ftorek...

... but more importantly, Steve Vickers, Cecil Dillon, Bob Nevin, Darren Turcotte

I don't think they've been great defensively this year. Girardi has not been as good has he has been in past seasons. Ditto Staal. Stralman I don't think that Stralman is all that much better than he was last season. McDonagh has improved offensively, but defensively I don't feel he's been better. MDZ obviously took a step back. And Moore has been pretty mediocre.

I'm not saying they're bad. I just don't think that they have been as solid as they have been. And there's a reputation that is preceding them at the moment. Part of that is the new system, part of that his Hank but part of it is they have not been playing to their full abilities.

Hey! I liked Walt. (Although Turcotte was one of my early favorites, up there with Jeep.)

Hmm... Klein plays RD... McIlrath wears number 8 in the minors and I believe at TC... Is he on his way out? :) :sarcasm:

One of the top 12, it would seem.

I think the defense is OK. Its had depth problems for a while and contains a lot of redundant type players. With all the drafting the team did on D from 2005-2010, I'd expect it to be in better shape than it actually is.

Turcotte was my first ever favorite Ranger. He was also awesome in NHLPA '93

defensively they just got better. addition by subtraction. gone are the wtf defensive lapses and 20 minutes of really nothing that del zotto brought replaced by some kevin klein hustle, snarl and reliable defensive play.

also, we now have better balance and that matters. thats what i like about this trade the most. we now have 3 pairs that look like they make sense.

staal, mcd, and moore

girardi, stralzie, and klein.

looks alot better to me.

I also think the D is not quite as good as it has been before either, but the offense finding a solid groove has slightly overcompensated for that. Which, ultimately was the whole idea behind bringing AV on board in the first place.

On top of that I think Stralman has been better defensively at the expense of any offense he used to have & honestly it's so, so tough to make a comparison with Staal because of the eye injury. That changed everything for him & for the team.

Agreed!

There's something to be said for the eye test telling us that the D hasn't been as good... but numbers-wise?

Right now the GA/G is at 2.52. Last year it was 2.25. Take out the first 5, disastrous, games for the Rangers this year, and their GA/G is 2.26. So, while the eye test might make us feel uncomfortable, their defense has really been about the same as it was last year when you discount the play of a team that doesn't resemble the current one.

I really like this deal. We get better now and have more flexibility regarding the Girardi situation. MDZ was on a bad path here; this needed to be done and we acquire a soild second pairing defenseman on a good contract. We finally replaced Michael Sauer.

I expected a drop in the defense with change to man to man. Its just more difficult to play than what the team was accustomed to. Logic dictates it should allow an improved transition and more even strength offense. We havent exactly seen that. Any offensive improvement has been on the powerplay.

I agree with this.

I think people have to remember that statistical D is not just on the D-men & the goalies. The forwards were hideous earlier in the season at backchecking & rotating.

Now the cohesion is infinitely better & should be more solid thanks to Klein.

Agree with this too. The one thing is the attack is defintely more sustained at even strength than in a long, long time...just not getting the results. Which as you said the PP has compensated for that.

Is it sustainable like this moving forward the rest of the season? Not so certain.

Karl Kevin Klein, No 8.

Was 888 taken?

(JOKE)

So he is massively better defensively than Stralman, but nowhere close to as good defensively as Girardi.

That's a joke IMO.

Stralman is 3rd best defender on this team IMO with Staal's declining play.

Continues to be underrated.

Preds fan here and thought I wiould drop by and give you all an idea of the type of player you are getting. Over the past 3 season he has been a rock solid #4 on our second pairing. There is nothing flashy about him but he can and will skate up the ice and make plays. Generally though he is a stay at home D-minded guy. He is also a top notch shot blocker and penalty killer. He will drop the gloves every blue moon and holds his own. He isn't a big hitter but has a mean streak to him but plays smart when it comes to taking penalties. He doesn't really have a great shot and you will never see him on the power play. Something to keep an eye on that really has nothing to do with his playing is when a player next to him on the bench is interveiwed watch Klein. He knods his head to everything being said. I always got a kick out of it.

I think this trade will work out well for both teams for different reasons. Klein will help you guys now and hopefully MDZ will help us out long term. Wish KK all the best though. He will be missed in Nashville.
