Insider Trading: Leafs' assistant GM Gilman spotted at back-to-back Canucks games

Confirms NYR interest in Miller, Rakell & Chiarot. Says NYR one of few times to actually speak to Vancouver about JT Miller.

From Arthur Staple of The Athletic on:

Rickard Rakell
Two league sources indicated that the Rangers have shown increased interest of late in Ducks winger Rickard Rakell, a pending UFA who has 15 goals this season and is on pace for his first 20-goal season since 2017-18.

Rakell makes a lot of sense for the Rangers
He’s a rental and shouldn’t cost a big premium, although one of the sources said the price should still be a first-round pick at this point. He’s a right wing, which the Rangers need. And he played his youth hockey in Sweden with fellow 2011 first-rounder Mika Zibanejad.

JT Miller
Another source said that the Rangers are still taking a run at Canucks forward J.T. Miller, who has been the Rangers’ main focus of trade discussions for a while now. Vancouver’s new front office has a decision to make on whether to keep Miller, who is tied for 10th in the league in scoring with 21 goals and 61 points this season and has a year left on his contract at a $5.25 million cap hit. But the Canucks are still listening on Miller.

As of last week, it was thought the Canucks were insisting on young Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider in return. That’s a non-starter for the Rangers, so they may end up looking elsewhere unless Vancouver takes an interest in Nils Lundkvist as the prospect piece of a potential deal.

Mark Giordano & Calle Jarnkrok
Kraken assistant GM Jason Botterill was at the Garden on Wednesday, and Seattle has been open for business for a while. “There’s no untouchables there,” a league executive said.

If the Rangers decide that their first-rounder should be spent on a defenseman (highly unlikely, but hey, we have to discuss it), Mark Giordano is on their radar. Seattle needs picks and prospects to add to their rather empty pipeline, and Giordano is likely to be the top trade chip they have, even though he’s the first Kraken captain.

Calle Jarnkrok is believed to be on the Rangers’ list, and the interest in a versatile bottom-six forward might be higher with Kevin Rooney now sidelined on a week-to-week basis with an upper-body injury.

Panarin and Mika aren’t getting younger. Kreider is having a career year. The goaltending is beyond spectacular. The Rangers should take advantage of this opportunity right now. Two playoffs with Miller right now is wise. In two years will the Rangers be this good?

Yes. Every single Rangers prospect will exceed expectations and start having career years as soon as next year. Panarin, Kreider, Zibajenad will suffer no fallout as they enter their 30's, they'll actually get better. This is not an outlier year for Chris Kreider, this is the player everyone figured would show up sooner rather than later and why all Rangers fans openly applauded his extension. After they resign Strome to a 5/27.5 contract they'll be solid down the middle for years. Their window is two decades. Revel.

What are the Ranger pieces that have enough value to return an elite guy to help them win now: Lafreniere, Schneider, Chytl, Kakko, 1st?

Laf, Schneider and Kakko are not being moved.

Plenty of assets to get a top player without moving your best young players
To return an “elite” player the Rangers will need to move a young player with “elite” potential. Or, the Rangers wait and hope their current top players continue to perform at their current levels, while their young guys become contributors to winning. It’s a risk vs reward gamble. 100% Rangers choice.

Lafreniere, Schneider and Kakko aren't getting traded. All are important parts of the team going forward. I don't think either Othmann or Cuylle are available.

Available pieces are Lundkvist, Jones, Robertson, Chytil, Barron, Gauthier, 1st, NYR 2nd, St. Louis 2nd. And other lesser players, prospects and picks.

What like the elite potential Vegas moved for Eichel?

Rakell is an interesting case. He’s been inconsistent this year but I could see a lot of interest - basically any team looking for secondary scoring. If he finds some chemistry in a new situation he’s got a lot of upside down the stretch run.
