Halak started awful, but didn't finish so bad? I mean, you can do better than a totally-washed Quick as backup, no?

Quick doesn't have the ability to play the position anymore. He's literally worse right now than Brodeur was by the time he had to play for the Blues. Actually, forget even that. Quick right now is worse than Marty Biron was in 2013.

I almost feel bad for Rangers fans. This is the kind of signing that could derail their season if Igor misses anything close to significant time. Unless they plan to start Igor 65-70 games (which I don't think that's the plan) this is a BAD signing.

Quick is absolutely terrible and washed up.

I guess if he's bad enough, they'll turn it over to their third string goalie in Hartford or whatever prospect they have, who is almost assuredly better than Quick.

This may turn out like Biron in 2013, which is how Cam Talbot made it into the league. Another one that comes to mind is Nabokov when he signed in Tampa, which is how Vasilevskiy came into the league.

I remember him playing a game at MSG later this year, and I think he only lasted part of 2 periods before he was pulled. And I swear he allowed like 4 goals (maybe even 5?) on possibly even single digits in shots faced. If I'm not mistaken, this was his last game as a King and he was traded just a few nights later.

Good pick up for a back up. Former cup winner, not getting the hate.
Brodeur is a former cup winner, you think someone should sign him too?

Patrick Roy is a former cup winner, you think someone should sign him too?

Hasek is a former cup winner, you think someone should sign him too?

Oh, they're all in their 50's, right? So that's a bad example, right?

Quick last year looked like he could have been the 58 year old current Hasek coming out of retirement and trying to play in the NHL. He seriously looked like an EBUG. An OLD EBUG.

Former cup winner should not mean he gets signed. He's washed up, he's not good anymore. Who cares about the cups he won 9-11 years ago? He's not that same goalie anymore.

''Oh but he just won a cup a couple weeks ago!''

Yeah, while playing as many minutes in the playoffs as their equipment manager.

It's not hate, Quick is just a terrible goalie in modern times. If I were a Rangers fan, I would be PISSED right now. I admit, I don't know what their goalie pipeline looks like. If they have a decent goalie in Hartford coming up, I might be a little less pissed if I were a Rangers fan. Last year their vet third stringer was Louis Domingue. I've shat on Domingue ENOUGH, but I'm pretty damn sure Domingue is a better goaltender in the years 2023 and 2024 than Jonathan Quick's cremains.

Some guys just can't play at the NHL level anymore and now-37 year old Quick is clearly one of them. I can't remember the last time a once REALLY good goalie looked this bad in his last few years in the league. Brodeur got pretty bad at the end, Hasek was bad his last year and lost his starting job in the playoffs and had to watch from the bench. Maybe one of the recent pending HOF inductees Barrasso and Vernon? They were pretty terrible at the end.

These are his stats the last 5 years - and he's 37. I agree, it is good!
And in none of those seasons did he play less than 20 as a backup. Try harder

Don’t worry barring injury Igor will play the majority of games so it won’t really matter anyway.
They have to be excited at something since they dont have a starting goalie. Remember just 2 years ago they were saying Blackwood was a future star

backup goalies play at least 20 games in today's NHL. If you are comfortable with Jonathan Quick playing ~20 games, you probably haven't watched him in a few years.

man, its okay to disagree with moves your own team makes. You don't need to stan every single move. Quick sucks ass.

Well most backup goalies do suck ass which is why they are..backups and not starting goalies.

I get that the Rangers maybe had a bad experience with Georgiev not working behind Shesty as a "young backup with upside"...but they maybe didn't need to overcorrect quite so thoroughly with guys like Halak or Quick on the absolute last legs. That seems extreme to me.

That's like 25 games a year that you might be throwing away. That's assuming your start stays healthy. Doesn't seem necessary.

Are they just trying to get old timer playoff hero guys to mentor Shestyerkin or something?

They are signing whoever is agreeing to play vet minimum. Don’t think there’s more to it than than

I honestly thought he would have retired.

3 cups, this past year go out on a high note.

I thought he was pissed when he was dealt because he was going to ride off into the sunset with LA ?

I'm sure he will defend firing their coach after 2 seasons and replacing him with Laviolette. Sucks to suck haha

Garand in the AHL so just buying him time to develop

Where is the money coming from? We couldn't afford to keep Georgiev. Every penny counts this offseason. The options for a good backup/1B, etc doesn't exist this year.

I'm assuming Halak wanted a little more money, and even 200k more puts him out the door over another backup.

The only goalie we have within the system souldn't be thrown to a backup role, yet. Not a lot of options for a good backup.
