Johnson is a very different player than his stats would indicate. One of the most prominent cases where advanced stats don't tell the whole picture and the eye test is much more informative.
Staal on the other hand hasn't been a useful player since his injuries. He was very good a few years ago, but now he is essentially playing out his career.
Even if we assume Johnson is only as good as his stats, that means both players are terrible. So we will keep the one with the better contract.
Only way Columbus takes Staal is if New York takes David Clarkson.
That's not accurate on Staal. You haven't paid attention to him if you think he hasn't be useful since his injury.
