Johnson is a very different player than his stats would indicate. One of the most prominent cases where advanced stats don't tell the whole picture and the eye test is much more informative.

Staal on the other hand hasn't been a useful player since his injuries. He was very good a few years ago, but now he is essentially playing out his career.

Even if we assume Johnson is only as good as his stats, that means both players are terrible. So we will keep the one with the better contract.

Only way Columbus takes Staal is if New York takes David Clarkson.

That's not accurate on Staal. You haven't paid attention to him if you think he hasn't be useful since his injury.

There is no way Clarkson is even close to on the same level as Staal.

There is too much exaggeration that goes on concerning Staal from both the Ranger and other fan bases. I am not even a huge fan of his game but my goodness people.

It's moot, IMO.

Staal does not waive to get killed under Torts.

didn't he get his big payday while playing under torts? I forget what lightning player it was that said they hated playing under torts while playing under him but afterwards appreciated his coaching. Maybe Staal would be in the same boat.

Not saying I think he would waive, just that it may not be because of Torts

There's been more than one player that's said that, including Dubi if I recall correctly.

Who would you rather have as your 3rd pairing LHD, Staal or Werenski? Take skills and contract into account. My answer is Werenski, and it isn't even close. So, who would I rather have. Clarkson until 2019-2020 (who at some point might be put on LTIR) or Staal until 2020-2021.

Actually it's moot because it never gets to the point Staal would be considered by the CBJ. There simply is no reason to pursue Staal. I think it's already been said but if we wanted a $4M+ player on the 3rd pair the CBJ would not have bought out Tyutin.

Not that this is actually feasible but I always thought somewhere down the road Girardi would get back with Torts. I think G thrived in that system, not sure if Columbus plays the same defense first style the Rangers did under Torts, but Girardi might have an easier time finding hi game with him. He clearly is not cut out for a faster puck moving team game that the Rangers try to play under AV.

That system also destroyed Girardi.

I had been hopeful but doubt it at this point. Maybe we can pawn them into taking Staal.

Absolutely. Probably earned him that big contract though, I'm G would take that any day of the week.

Also, if there's anyone arrogant enough to believe they can turn G into a productive player again, it's Torts (though AV seems to be giving him a run for his money).

I think he was talking about points per 60, 5 on 5. Not just goals.

Not true, I take my vitamins and from 2013-14 through 2015-16 Staal has won 50% of his faceoffs while JJ has lost all of his!
