Columbus seems to need a vet LHD, NYR could use a savvy, gritty vet for the 3rd line and open up D upgrade possibilities. 2 year difference in contract offset by 5 yr age difference. NY either retains 500k to even out cap hit and adds a middling prospect or includes someone like Jensen to compete for Hartnell's backfill. A swap of unfavorable contracts based on team needs.

Staal, 500k retained + say Fogarty or Hughes or 0 retained and Jensen for Hartnell.

I think JD goes for this.

Why does CBJ do this? The only really unfavorable thing about Hartnell's contract is the no movement with the expansion draft coming up. Otherwise, 4.7 cap hit with 3M actual salary is well worth it for a 50 point winger. Staal on the other hand is just bad at hockey.

Plus if you're offsetting $ through retention, you may want to include the 11.4M for the extra 2 years Staals contract runs (Hartnell a UFA in 2020, Staal in 2022)

Horrible trade. Hartnell is good and the left side is fine. Id rather run with Murray-Johnson-Werenski/Kukan then see Staal getting that much money to be on the 3rd pair for that many years

Bad trade.

Columbus has Murray - Jones and Johnson - Savard in its top-4. No way Staal can beat out any of those guys. It's way too much money to spend on the 3rd pairing. Columbus just bought out Tyutin for a similar reason.

Hartnell MAY go downhill someday, but Staal is already well on his way.

Bad bad bad trade proposal.

Also he has an NMC.

Wow, if only Columbus had a left handed, veteran, stay at home defenseman who is overpaid and has an NMC. What would they do? Oh yeah, they would buy him out like they literally just did with Fedor Tyutin.

I can't see Columbus doing that.

I'd be interested in Savard depending on the price.

This is really really bad. It doesn't look at Columbus for needs and doesn't seem to know Hartnells actual value. If it wasn't for the expansion draft there would be nothing that would hurt Hartnells value. He is a top line producing wing playing 3rd line minutes and has great leadership qualities whilst making less real money then the actual cap hit. Our only reason to trade him now that we are out of cap hell is to make room for young guys.

Staal is better than JJ.

I think Staal with 1.7M retained for Hartnell would be fair.

CBJ get a veteran second-pair D who will excel with someone like Murray or any mobile defender on his pair, at a 4M cap-hit.

Rangers open up a top-4 spot for Skjei on the left side so he doesn't have to play his off side, get two years shorter contract length, but have to pay 1.7M in dead space for retention because of it. Hartnell adds an element that NYR could use more of. Too many vanilla players. Hartnell is not vanilla, and can still produce and score those dirty garbage goals when there's less room for "pretty goals" in the playoffs

1. That's debatable.
2. Johnson's contract is much nicer than Staal's.
3. If Columbus were to play Staal over Johnson (again, quite debatable), then Johnson would be on the 3rd pairing and making way too much for that.
4. Zach Werenski is going to be ready for top-4 minutes in a year or two.

Columbus simply has no room on defense for Staal. They have no need. And Staal is a bad player with a worse contract.

It's like a 0/10 as far as trade proposals go.

bad 4 both
NY does NOT want if it is a swap of surviving NMCs

also Marc does not waive for Torts
another tour under him and Marc will be lucky to be able to walk

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was going to say. Proposals like this really drive home just how hideously, criminally underrated Hartnell is around here.

EDIT: Or, put differently: Want to send us Staal? OK, great! Enjoy Clarkson. Because that's just about the only way it's going to happen.

Politely decline from Columbus. Makes no sense at all. Hartnell remains productive and with fewer years on his contract while ultimately costing less this is a no brainer to keep him.

I for one am getting really rather tired of people apparently thinking of Hartnell as "like Clarkson except he can still sorta play for now maybe". It's like comparing present-day Joe Thornton to present-day Marc Savard.
