I think Friedman wrongfully assumed Trouba is signed for 1 more year, mistaking the debates surrounding him reaching UFA territory next year with being UFA next year.

Trouba is RFA and the moment you acquire a player's rights, you can negotiate an extension

I think if they didn’t trade for him, they could talk on July 1 because he’s an RFA, and it would be like offer sheet contract talking, but now that the Rangers have his rights they can talk to him right now

I think they want to hedge against the uncertainty of Panarin.

I think the Rangers emerged feeling much more confident about their ability to get Trouba in house (and eventually) under contract.

I still think they’d love to move Kreider, ideally for a kid they like in the draft, and apply Kreider’s salary toward what they’d pay Panarin. I just think there’s more moving parts there.

He’s their player now, I don’t think that’s an issue. But even if it is, I’d be surprised if they don’t already have an idea as to what the demand is.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. I think they know what the price is, and I honestly think they aren’t even blinking in that regard.

This is the type of deal where it’s definitely easier to be the Rangers than it is someone like Carolina.

On that same note, I am also getting responses with the Rangers thinking that Florida might make a move to get a negotiation window with Panarin. Which leads me to believe this was a deal the Rangers wanted DONE now.

Why? To make the club more desirable to Panarin? Not following the logic...
