The difference is that Ilya is our first very good goalie since Smith. rangers have had 4 decades and one cup. thats why im saying that. This isn't a slap at the islanders time, its a time to realize how much the Rangers have wasted incredible goalies due to poor offensive teams like the Lundqvist era.
You think people don’t already know this?

It’s remarkable how good this organization has been in drafting goalies. They go from a decade of Mike Richter to a decade of Henrik Lundqvist and now they’re in the era of Igor Shesterkin. If you want to go even further back, you could even include John Vanbiesbrouk. That’s 4 full decades of having an elite goaltender. Has any other NHL team had this stretch of drafting elite goalies?
and they have 1 cup, won 30 years ago to show for it. Won with aging Oilers stars on top of it.

Seems like a pretty loose interpretation of "Elite" to have Richter included in this assessment. He was never elite.

Richter was mostly in that tier just below elite, but he had that extra god mode that only a few guys have. When he was on, it really wasn't any different than facing one of the big name guys at their best. His "normal" mode was a bit below those guys though.

He also was particularly good in those games where the shtf and he had to hold the fort by himself. Game 6 against NJ and the deciding World Cup game being the best examples.

Richter played in a very strong era for goaltending. Hasek, Roy, Brodeur, Belfour, Cujo. Today, the best goalies change from year to year. Richter was just overshadowed by some great ones. And towards the back half of Richter's almost decade as the Rangers starter, the Rangers had expensive(pre-cap) rosters that had absolutely zero chemistry and sucked.
