It might be close for the rest of the season but beyond that it is not even close

It is incredibly tough to join a team midseason - pace of the game & finding a role on a top team are tough things to do

Will be interesting to see how Dzingel does on a new team... I am not convinced that he's a 30-30 guy but I think he can be a 25-20 + guy for sure. Good player.

I cant vote because I have a new account but I would go Nylander, in case that wasnt obvious!

Let’s add some context:

Player 1 - 26 years old
Career - GP 235 - G 59 - A 58 - Pts 117

Player 2 - 22 years old
Career - GP 202 - G 49 - A 89 - Pts 138

OP is embarrassing. I’d also encourage you to look up the definition of neutral. Negative bias actually means you’re not neutral.

Just because somebody votes against your player in a poll on HFBoards does not mean they have a negative bias against your player.

One is a player who can drive his line's offense, the other is a speedy complimentary player who in his best years might chip in with 50+ points.

Not a hard choice.

[mod] Isn't this place to compare players? Dzingel is super underrated and I thought he should be in this conversation. I'd much rather have him over nylander, and theres a lot of people that agree with that. Sure nylanders had good numbers in the past but his awful play this year shouldn't be brushed off so easily. A lot of players peak early on in their careers. Way to turn it into a p***ing war again guys.

That’s true, but when a few particular posters consistently pose as the unofficial opposition to all things Toronto Maple Leafs, it becomes a little suspect... especially in a poll like this.

I’ve seen you direct this sort of post at people before and it may be fair in some instances, but this probably isn’t one of them... and I’d hardly call Nylander ‘my player’ ... my opinion on him has shifted a little because of the contract negotiations, but objectively speaking he’s still the better player.

He's not in the conversation.

So you’re bitter I disagreed with you a year ago? And your response is to oppose me on this and kill your own credibility?

I'm not bitter at all lol, I'm just calling you out for calling the OP "embarassing". There are legitimate arguments that Dzingel is the better player right now. My opinion on this topic has nothing to do with you, so please don't flatter yourself.

Not sure if the guy who argued for Fiala over Marner should be on a high horse over old polls.

Marner VS Fiala

I'm sure this take will age just as well.

Yea I was wrong on that one for sure. Fiala is a frustrating player - so talented but seems to flake out for periods with not much of a reason - I was really hoping for a breakout year this season and he just hasn't stepped up. That said he has picked it up after a slow start - he's got 6g 19p in his last 26gp with 2nd line deployment. He'd probably be good for 60-70 points with a center like Tavares, but clearly Marner has taken a step forward and Fiala has stagnated. So much for generalities, eh?

I'm not all that surprised by Marner's production levels given 1) the increase in scoring and 2) he's got a franchise center-man that he's been connected at the hip with. I would think Marner would be a top 10-20 scorer with Tavares on his line, but instead of that equating to a 75-85p player, that's like a 100p player this year. He's one of my favorite players - I'm on record claiming that he was a 1st overall caliber talent before he even stepped on NHL ice.

I think Nylander is the more talented player, but if you ask me who I want on my team THIS season Id have to go with Dzingel considering both contracts and each player's play to this point.

I don’t see much of a legitimate argument being made by anyone who voted Dzingel?

Re; the second part - it’s important to remember Marner was above PPG over the back half of last season when he was eventually put with Kadri. Bozak and JVR aren’t really high IQ players so you really saw his game take off when put with another guy who can make plays and see/think the game at a high level. He was kind of being held back at times, especially early in the year when demoted for to the 4th line despite being the least responsible for the lines struggles. Babcock rode him hard before ever putting him with one of their top two centres... He eventually forced his hand and you’d have to look it up but I know he’s put together a pretty impressive stretch ever since. Well over a point per game while being satisfactory to good in the neutral and d zone, even killing penalties this year.

... I’d even argue Tavares actually benefits more from Mitch Marner. The duo certainly drive each others numbers up, but the same can be said of most elite players who play on a top line.
