1-i never said nylander is not a great player or anything like this. He a great player when he was playing like he did last night not how he played most of the time against tampa

2-nylander had been on the ice a 5v5 8 time and 8 at even strenght... 3-4 of those goal nylander cant do nothing. I count 5 of those goal where he could help and avoid it and 4 he was his mistake. 2 of those was lack of work, 2 he did pretty bad read and didn't cover the the right player/ area... 4 goal happened because of his defensive work, he got 2 assist at 5v5 in tampa series. Watch it the way you want, at 5v4 he was not good at all. He was nothing else than a pp specialist with basically a negative impact at 5v5.

thats not making him a bad player but only a player who can bring more to leafs than what he did at 5v5. He cant only start to play in pp, 4v4, 6v5 or after a round if leafs win it.

First, I never said that you said he was a bad player - I have no idea where you came up with that.

Earlier you said he was on for 9 of 16, now it's 8 at 5-on-5 and 8 more at ever strength? That makes no sense.

But it's still all irrelevant in a thread about his play since he signed the new contract,, which was January 8, 2024.

Did you even watch the game? Several times he took a straight-line path to the puck and got it out, resulting in him taking a hit from Descharnais,
his "flailing" of the stick was him attempting to get in passing lanes, did he fail? yes but it wasn't cowardly, just a play the didn't work. Knies lost the board battle (big shocker), tavares was also watching, and tbh that goal was the weakest of the 3 samsonov let in, straight along the ice and under him, but nonetheless still a cross ice pass.

As for players who are more cowardly, we just saw RNH the ghost do nothing for 58 minutes and 30 seconds, he looked like a kid playing in a mens league.

What about Bouchard? he got out of matthews's way to have him take the puck, he was so scared of initiating contact that he'd rather matthews get the puck first

Willy has points in 54 games this year.

Matty has points in 46, Mitch in 44, Mo in 38, JT in 37, MacKinnon in 60, Kucherov in 58, McDavid and Panarin in 56, Pastrnak and Rantanen in 52.

Maybe he's critiquing him in a game where he was good because it's hard to find a game where he wasn't good.

Maybe he doesn't realize that avoiding a check while keeping the puck isn't the same as giving up the puck to avoid getting hit.

Of course he doesn't even have his stats right - for example, Michael Nylander managed 34 hits in 920 games, while Willy has 151 hits in only 590 games.

Edit: Michael didn't take any fighting majors either, so he's wrong there too.

RNH and Bouchard disappear in any physical game, that's called being a coward. You haven't watched Michael Nylander if you think he has more tenacity than his son.

But if you want a list of multiple seasons I'll be glad to give you one: Phil Kessel, Johnny Gaudreau, Jonathan Huberdeau, H and D Sedin , Patrick Kane, Patrik "Loser" Marleau, Hughes Trio. So yea, there are many many players. Hell Marner is just as soft if not softer than him, and Matthews hates touching other players.

Moving on, you do know that being able to score goals and make plays is also important to playoff hockey, and is bigger than why we have lost in the playoffs every year. You can't defend a lead if you don't have one. Since entering the league he has 40 in 50, since signing his contract he has 32 in 37, since breaking out he has 29 in 30. Those are the stats that matter the most, and Ideally he does even better as the playoffs come.

On the last goal....he stood in his position, was his stick facing the wrong way? probably, but he in no way should've been covernig draisaitl especially in "man to man" when edmonton has 6 guys....is he supposed to guard two people? No he collapsed to the middle so if the puck goes back to bouchard or ekholm, hes in the way for a potential block.

That's not to mention that entire play has nothing to do with "being a coward", unless making a mistake is being a coward. In that case, Mcdavid is just as big if not a bigger coward for that second McMann goal because not only was he standing around, but he was also lazy at 5 on 5. Moreover, if samsonov stops a puck sliding across the ice, none of that matters but whatever, or if knies doesn't lose another board battle.

in terms of man-to-man, he and tavares held mcdavid and draisaitl to 0 points and outscored them 2-0 at 5v5. So I along with many others think he did very well 5 on 5 man coverage.

So which one is he "cowardly" or bad defensively? You mix both of them up and seem to confuse yourself. The former has no basis, especially compared to his teammates and others who've come before. The latter has an arguement to be made, but it's significance is overrated a lot of the time

His shot off the rush is elite.

How many goals do you all think he'll end the season with?

I think 50 is out of reach. 47g would tie him with JT with one of the highest non matthews goal scoring campaign in 30 years.

He will be the new Marner getting heat for not playing up to his contract.. until Marner signs. then its back to Marner again.

This started with Tavares and just gone out of hand. If Nylander play like this 5 years or so, not many will complain to much, in five years he will be a bargain if this continues. But he should slow down in only two tree years. Maby as soon as next year. I blame the dude getting Tavares for all of this.

I think we have seen the best of Willie. He even does not take many days off. I guess if you play him with a stud C, he could put up more points but you are not getting one soon enough.

If he gets 40/100 for the next 5 years, it still will be too much. At least by then he will probably be not in the top 20 in cap hit anymore.

It won't be as big as a problem once JT comes off the books and the cap rises. Will be interesting to see if they keep up the charade and pay Marner $12+m if they bow out in round #1 again. Sorry, paying these 3 all that money when they have proven they are not good enough to win more than 1 playoff round in 8 series is insanity. Hell they can't even rise to the occasion once in game #7s. Their numbers in game #7s say it all for me.

I was chatting with a Canucks fan yesterday and came to the realisation that if they go oit in Round 1 and run it back again, for the first time in my life I will find it difficult to get up for next season.

At this point even a coaching change might be enough

Something like that could work. He can create offense out of nothing, he just needs guys to keep up with him and not getting his way. And ideally one of the line mates can help cover him Defensively when he's looking to break out.

And I think JT can even benefit from being away from him too, by getting paired with a couple guys who play more along his style
