Proposal: NYI/SJ

I wouldn't trade the Stars 1st for Dobson straight up.

Doesn't matter though. He's a free agent. Why pay assets when you can just sign him.

The poster you quoted is obviously referencing the fact that Dobson is a year away from unrestricted free agency.
Is that really obvious?

Seems to me the first poster maybe thought he was a pending UFA. Dobson is an RFA, and the point of the Isles trading him would be partly to bypass extending him or getting in a situation where he could force becoming a UFA in a year. And "you can just sign him" obviously doesn't include an offer sheet because that would involve more than the Stars' 1st.

Not that I think the initial trade proposal was a fair one....

lmao no it wouldn’t. It’s pretty clear in this entire thread that the Sharks aren’t willing to pay up (which is fine) but that doesn’t mean we’ll just give him to you for cheaper. There will be plenty of teams willing to pay, and you don’t even know what Grier’s thinking, maybe he’s one of those willing bunch
Everybody thinks their guy will fetch some over payment or whatever. It almost never happens.

Didn’t Colorado just pay a 1st and a top prospect for a 34 year old center on an expiring contract that everyone was swearing would only return a 2nd and mediocre prospect? Somehow a 24 year old RFA defenseman coming off a 70 point season and still producing at a solid rate will return only return something equal to what Brock went for, if not less. Oh this place never changes. Dobson will easily go for higher like you said.
Deadline prices for UFAs are always much higher than summer prices. Always.

Insisting Dobson will get more than the typical "B+/A- prospect, late 1st, useful roster player" is just wishful thinking. That's what those guys always, always get.

Noah Dobson + Peter Engvall(negative Value) for Will Smith (or SJ's first rounder depending who is left on the board)

Islanders gain cap space plus a cost controlled Center, while SJ gets a young top pairing defensemen for their rebuild

Let me know when you find someone in the entire thread that is a decision maker. Meantime, Musty and a very late first is more than fair ask for Dobson's offense.

The Islanders will resign him to 8x10. 6’3 25 year old defensemen who skate the way he does do not grow on trees.Dobson, Romanov, and George will be on the Island for the next 7 years. You can have Pulock for a third and 4th thoug.
That's a much better fit for the Sharks. Still in the building phase. Need a couple solid defenseman to bump down Muk, Ferraro, and Liljigren while we add more talent through the draft.

I'd give up a 2nd+4th, though I recognise the Islanders may be looking to open up a bit of cap space, so it may be cheaper. RHD are in very short supply though. Ekblad, Fabbro, and....

5 more years at over 6 and he's already over 30. I'm not giving up more than a 4th for an OK defenseman who offers very little offensively.

Non-discussion as Pulock has a full NTC. Plus that contract is going to look horrible in a couple years, not sure I'd even want it for free.

For some reason I thought he was 29. While a 35 y/o in 5 years is not ideal, I’m pretty concerned about how we upgrade our RD. Outside Pohlkamp we have nothing coming, and he’s not a sure thing.

A) Good point, that’ll likely stop discussion.

B) It likely would in the last year maybe two, but pretty soon #4 dmen will be making between $6.5-8, especially with size and a right shot. If not Gavrikov (my first choice), don’t love the options in free agency.

he just had a disaster season and now isles fans are trying to get rid of him. he wouldn't get much more than chychrun got when arizona got rid of him the year after his disaster season, which is a 1st and two 2nds

Chychrun had 2+ years of contract before UFA remaining when he was traded. Very different situation than a player entering the final season of their contract like Dobson with one year of RFA left.

I think if Lou decides to move Dobson, he is going to target a young forward like Eklund as the key piece he'd be looking for in return.

NYI fans will logically see SJS as a possible trading partner because of the current lack of high level puck-moving defensemen, plenty of cap space, and more than enough on stock to trade in a deal.

SJS fans may see the interest level of their favorite team being less than an NYI fan would assume.

SJ is a logical location for a Dobson trade, it makes sense that Isles fans would propose trading Dobson to us.

They just don't seem to understand that players of Dobson's contract status with his inconsistent play don't land single high-end assets like Eklund, who is on his ELC. The contract status is a big piece affecting his value that fans like to ignore with statements like "assuming a contract extension is worked out at the time of the trade". I think it's pretty undeniable that Dobson, even if he came with an extension, is going to be pretty overpaid, which decreases his value. The more UFA years bought with a contract extension, the more the price and trade protection is going to resemble what he would get as an unrestricted free agent, which drives down his value.
