Like the player. Don't think he's the right fit for our 1st line. Don't think he'll score 20 either. But at 1.25mil....who cares!?!

Great pick up!

Scored 20 playing with much worse players on the leafs.

Think this is a real solid pickup for you guys

Now PAP is a shootout move that Isles badly need as few of their current roster player is good on shootout including JT. Eberle if can be acquired is good at that but Isles is no longer trading Hammer and Oilers moved Hall so any chance of getting Eberle is out of the window for good. Do not underestimate the importance of shootout. It can be the difference of where you finish going down the wire unless your PP and 6 on 5 is consistently good enough to allow you to close a game easily. With Isles face-off deficiencies in the D zone they would need to rely on getting some points in shootouts to make the playoff again. Without enough player with good shootout % it will be hard to do exactly that.

you put too much emphasize on good shootout players. if garth was building his team based on shootout points, he would had have offered frans the world, moon, and stars.

I think it's now more important to have good 3 on 3 players, rather than shootout specialists.

PAP did well the last time around and I wouldn't be surprised if JT had a hand in bringing him back

I know this is hearsay, but when I met John Tavares one of the questions I asked him was "Which former teammate do you still talk to the most?" and he said it was Parenteau. This was 2013. I wouldn't be surprised if Tavares asked Garth to bring him back, and I'm glad Parenteau came back on the cheap.

Not too long ago, Rick Dipietro was talking about Tavares and his growth into a leader. He said that he was really shy as a rookie and it took time for him to open up. If I recall correctly, Rick mentioned Parenteau and Konopka as two guys that really helped him loosen up. Tavares is reputed to be ultra serious and Parenteau comes across as a jokester, they seem to match up well because they balance each other out.

I remember when Tavares won player of the month or got selected to the All Star Game for the first time, Parenteau was getting interviewed about it and he said something like 'Johnny owes it all to me' or something to that effect. When JT was told about it, his response was a mix of amusement and 'what an idiot' (in that good way). It was a few years ago and my memory isn't what it was, but that always stood out to me. Kind of similar to that WJC video with PK Subban and Tavares where it was one of the rare times that you saw JT actually act like a goofy kid.

wow, puts 20 goals after a down season and gets his pay cut
ima say he hits 45-55 points this year

Realistically, he just didn't fit in many top 6 spots for a lot of teams, and I'm not even sure he ends up being used in a top 6 for the Islanders. Maybe they go back to some chemistry that works? I saw the paycut coming.

i mean 2.5 would have at least been fair. i agree with lack of spots/fits, but he just put 40 points on a disaster toronto team, and when healthy, PA just doesnt miss a beat. idk i wouldnt have minded him back tbh, but if he gets jt and 1st pp and favourable zone starts i wouldnt be surprised if he even hits 60 again.

Wonder what number PAP gets 15 is taken by Clutter.

How about 51? :sarcasm:

That's a good question though, I wonder what number he takes.

I've been thinking this myself. Maybe 26? He wore 17 for the Hartford Wolf Pack. He wore 38 for the Rangers, that number is available. Unless I missed Jack Hillen's jersey retirement ceremony :sarcasm:

He won't get 51, I feel it's too soon.

Like I said before, I think he took a paycut to do the Islanders a favor. If it wasn't for the Islanders and Tavares, he wouldn't have an NHL career.

This is true, there aren't many teams where Parenteau could have been a fit on other teams' top-6. If it wasn't for his chemistry with Tavares, I would have thought he'd have signed here as a scoring 3rd liner.

I really like that he's back, it's a safe fallback if they can't find someone better to play with Tavares on RW.

Parenteau puts up significantly better numbers this season and gets his pay cut

Probably because this UFA pool was a bit more rich than normal with top 6 wingers.

Good pickup for NYI

Great deal for the Islanders. I tought for sure he would be a bit over 2. A work horse that will give the Islanders 15-20 goals, with probably 40-50 points if they decide to try him with Tavares again. If not, they have a player that can move up all lines and look at home.

Guess it´s as said above, the top 6 talent was just to deep this UFA-season. Wouldn´t surprise me if Parenteau takes an gamble on that he will get time with Tavares, put up great TP and then try to cash in one maybe last contract with 2-2,5 millions a year for 2-4 seasons.

And I agree that he probably has a soft spot for the Islanders. Before he was paired with Tavares he was for Chicago and Rangers looking like an career AHL:er with a few call ups during his career. He was 27 then, the same age an player like Arcobello is now when he´s heading for safer but smaller cash in Europe.
After that he had his breaktrough season and then Parenteau signed an 1,250,000 millon 1 year contract (sounds familiar...) with the Islanders. And after that got an 16 million worth contract.
Those 2 Islanders seasons took him from having an great start to his life, with more money than most at 29, to an "set for life" at 33 if he has invested them wisely.
