Proposal: NYI/Edm deal built around Romanov+for Bouchard

FWIW, I suspect that Lou and Roy both love Romanov. His on-ice value is high - he's kind of the prototype of a physical defensive d-man in the "new NHL" because he can play 25 minutes a night, is a physical presence and very solid in his own zone, but he moves the puck well and, most importantly, is a very agile, quick skater. And his intangibles are through the roof. His effort on ice and off ice are 100% all the time. Supposedly great in the room. Being friends with Sorokin isn't unimportant.

Not a comment at all about Bouchard, but I doubt Romanov is available barring an unrefusable offer.

That's just it.. we don't need Cale Makar.. we need Adam Larsson or his equivalent.lol Just a solid hand that is better than Cody Ceci.

Bouchard is your dangerous R shot PP 1 QB. And the Oilers have such a high powered PP. It's one of the things that keeps teams honest when playing them.

Who on Edmonton becomes the PP1 QB if Bouchard is traded? Nurse? Ekholm?

Assume he's moved for Romanov (2nd pair guy) + Nelson (good top 6 scorer) + 1st round pick in 2025 (top 3 protected - so barely protected) and maybe more.

You still just badly dented Edmonton's PP1 to get more defensive and some more secondary scoring. Seems a sideways move at best. I don't like it for the Oilers.

Also - why do the Islanders need Bouchard so badly?

Nurse/Romanov-Klingberg
Romanov/Nurse-Emberson

It's worse than where we started and extremely unbalanced. Even if this is an offseason move, what's the point?

I do not see a PP1 QB in that list of six names. For a team that thrives on the PP today, that seems awfully stupid to me to deconstruct a good thing.

I guess in theory you could run Klingberg there but if I'm being completely honest I haven't seen much out of him to suggest he's even NHL calibre right now, never mind worth being trusted with 4-5 extra minutes of PP time
 
As an Oiler fan, I am interested in a deal for Romanov as we have no LD depth after Kulak, but he isn't the type of guy you bring in to be the #4LD. Plus, I'm not remotely interested in dealing Bouchard unless we get an equal or better RD back in the trade.

Your statement has been found FALSE on all counts, you should feel shame. Let's break down the implied statements:

1) Bouchard can only score on the powerplay.
FALSE: This year Bouchard is 5th in EV points. Last year he was 4th.

2) Bouchard is a product of McDrai.
FALSE: Over the past two years, Bouchard is 56% GF% and 55% xGF% without both McD and Drai
For Reference: During the same period, Makar is 46% GF% and 48% xGF%

3) If Bouchard was only scoring 30-40 points off the powerplay and away from McDrai it would diminish his value.
FALSE:
  • Scoring 30 EV Points:
    • 2024: 32 defenders achieved this (avg one per team = top pairing)
    • 2025: 31 defenders are on pace (avg ~ one per team = top pairing)
  • Scoring 40 EV Points:
    • 2024: Only 11 defenders acheived this (Elite of Elite, Bouchard 4th among them)
    • 2025: Currently 12 defenders on pace (Elite of Elite, Bouchard 5th among them)
SUMMARY: Your statement clearly demonstrates that don't know Bouchard and worse, you don't know hockey.
 
For what it's worth, it's looking like the Isles aren't even keen on ponying up the 8 MM that a Dman like Dobson could get on the open market.

At the same time, Romanov has become the most refreshing element on the NYI blueline whatsoever and his value goes far beyond any numbers he could put up.

The suggested move would ask the NYI to create one hole to pay considerably more to plug another hole they already have a peg for, one who is cheaper and yet already prepared to demand more money than desired.

Yeah, the Isles already have their puck moving defenseman, if they choose to give him a hefty pay day.

He is a legit top 4 defenseman on bad teams. I'm not sure if he is on a good team, but with a partner playing as well as Nurse has this year, I imagine he would be fine. We need a 2nd pair RD, but that player can absolutely be a #4, we don't need a #3 to anchor that pair. We just need someone who is better equipped to play in multiple situations and top opposition than Klingberg and Stecher. Although I'm not hating Klingberg so far - he's got work to do, and this is as good as he gets, he's our #7 to me, but if he is still knocking the rust off, he's shown that the skill hasn't eroded. He just needs to get back up to speed a bit more - if he can do that, we might not need a Murphy.

I don't hate Klingberg and even like the signing. I just don't see him solving our 2RD issue at all. I think the logic is that our D will all be passing so well that we won't need to defend because we will be transitioning to offence non stop.lol

If Klingberg can get his skating up, and knock off a bit more of the rust, he could be good enough in the 2nd pair RD slot, but I agree a better player would be nice. Klingberg was once an elite puck mover in the NHL, and that could certainly benefit Nurse. I don't expect Klinger will ever be what he used to be of course, but if his passing can get back to where it once was - and it isn't that far of - and if his skating can improve, he'll be a good fit there. We all wanted a shut down guy on that pair, but if we have someone who can get the forwards the puck more consistently than Stecher, it really might help out the team a great deal.

Although, I prefer to keep Klinger as our #7, and insurance in case Bouchard gets hurt, ha ha.
