Never said to take his word as gospel. He is more than a typical blogger or twitter person. He is a paid sports reporter. He has the phone numbers of those people referenced - whether they answer all the time or not. Whether they can tell him anything or not.
My point is the guy is credible. He has sources. And he shouldn't be so summarily disregarded in these matters simply because people don't like him, his message or his past role with the Islanders.
And sports reports are always believable? I think not.
You believe he has those contacts and their numbers but you do not know for a fact which is more speculation on your part. One could very argue that due to the fact he was fired by the NYI his access to information from them is highly questionable.
I don't dislike the guy and he may have contacts but he loses credibility when he doesn't name them. It's no different than the reporter who quotes the "anonymous player" in the locker room.
You can connect the dots however you wish, but it doesn't make it true. He is no more credible than anyone else commenting on the potential sale. Until it's official, it's all nothing more than rumor and hearsay and like I have said since the beginning, there is no story until there is a story.
Jeez, enough already. Botta isn't just issuing some random tweets or writing on a self-published blog. The information -- including direct quotes -- appeared on Sports Business Journal, where he's a staff member. He can't reveal his sources publicly, but he damn well better have them if his editor asks for them, and they had better be credible. Because SBJ markets itself as a reliable news and information resource for sports business professionals -- and charges a pretty penny for full access -- it won't tolerate axes to grind or other nonsense. He starts making stuff up or using shaky sources and he's out the door. Zero incentive for him mucking up his main source of income. If anything, there's probably stuff he's heard or knows about that he's been slow about publishing or has held completely back on precisely because they come from sources he can't confirm. It's how this whole journalism thing actually works. And sports reports are always believable? I think not.

i think i would be happier with Wade Dubielewicz as team president. at least he cotributed something to the franchise!
Are Isles fans supposed to be thrilled at the thought of Gretzky in the front office? He was lousy in Phoenix.
On ice success as a player, is no guarantee of front office or coaching success.
I just post the info I find. Don't shoot the messenger.
Sorry. Not taking shots at the messenger
I'm just not excited at the thought of adding ex-players who have either no success as execs/coaches (Gretzky) or no experience at the jobs being offered ( Shanahan offered job as GM or Team President).
I would like to see the isles bring in experienced execs, who have previous success.
Wayne Gretzky is the coca-cola of the NHL.. Everyone knows who he is and if he tagged with the Islanders Franchise we just eliminated the terrible stench of the Wang/Milbury/Snow era of losing.
This is what the organization needs.. You cant fault Wayne for coming on board trying to save a franchise that was 1 foot out the door and battling with the city for a new arena.
At least if he comes here, we have the arena problems and ownership issues squared away.
Do either have degrees at an accredited New England institution i what I want to know?
Do the Isles even have a President? I'm pretty sure Wayne would do a better job than whoever we have now.

The problem is that it's a gimmick.
Gretzky is not some highly sought after, front office guru.
He's a great ex-player, who was nothing short of horrible in coaching in Phoenix.
I think it's a little more nuanced than that. I think they want the "President" role in the new NHL front office to be about direction, philosophy, fan buy-in and credibility from a hockey knowledge perspective. I think the GM role is now about scouting, drafting, cap mgmt, developing, trading and signing players only. Prez picks coach with GM input. GM executes philosophy of prez. If you look at TOR and VAN hires, that's the model, IMO. Objectives and veto power go to the prez, day-to-day execution of objectives belong to GM.
From that perspective, Gretz would be a great prez I think. He has some exec experience with team Canada's olympic teams and I think if he was hired to be that "I'm the guy in charge" face, set the tone and philosophy, aid in recruiting FAs, etc. I think he'd be ideal. Leave the heavy lifting on the player side to a guy like Garth, who had to answer to Gretz and his philosophies, and I think we'd actually be in pretty good shape.
Not knowing Gretz, this is where I would want to know if his ego would allow him to defer to the GM on the inevitable questions regarding on ice issues. You don't want a puppet GM.
