Also, I thought our young defensemen looked like young defensemen a lot last night. Overall, they've been better than expected so far, but last night, to me, was a bit of a bump in the road for them.

While true, the entire team looked terrible (other than Lack). Some of the worst neutral zone play I've seen from the forwards. They had spurts of life, but for the most part, they were just going through the motions which set the defense up for failure.

They just looked gassed to me. Concerned about the upcoming games too for the same reason. I suspect the young guys are starting to hit that rookie conditioning wall.

Kinda what I was thinking. Pesce especially looked gassed and in fairness, he plays a more physically demanding game along the boards which is more wearing on a person, where-as Hanifin, and to a lesser degree Slavin, use their skating/puck ability to get out of trouble. A lot of battles we would see Pesce win in the past, he seemed to be losing last night. Didn't see the jump into the offensive zone from him as much either.

True, the whole team stunk it up.

Versteeg and Lindholm play like the opposing goalie has a restraining order against them.

Agreed. Pesce looks spent.

I mean they couldn't have stunk it up too bad, they only gave up 21 shots and the goalie gave up 2 goals high glove. That's how analyzing a game works right?

No, because at least 10 of the shots came from the low slot, which are precisely the kinds of shots that a good defense prevents. If you're going to mock statistical analysis, at least do it properly.

I'm mocking the people ******** on Ward after the Devils game they lost by the same score and the goalie had zero chance on any of the goals. But you know, whatever.

Makes me wonder if it's just a time zone thing. Human circadian rhythms affect energy levels, not just sleep patterns, and it's physiologically far harder to start a game at 10pm on your body clock than it is to start one at 7, or to go forward 3 hours and start one at 4. The Canucks were playing from 7-10pm, the Canes were playing from 10pm to 1am.

As an aside, that's my theory as to the reason the west always has a better record overall than the east- the physiological reactions that make it far easier for a western team to go east than it is for an eastern team to go west. It's also one of the reasons Columbus and Detroit wanted out of the West so badly.

"Your theory" has been discussed for years :)

I wouldn't be shocked to see Slavin, Pesce and Hanifin get some nights off leading up to the All Star break to give them some rest. Jordan is a scratch waiting to get some time on the ice, they could bring up Murphy and/or Carrick/Biega/Lowe (depending on injuries in Charlotte) to get some NHL time as the kids get rest. If they rotate the rest, everybody could get some time and the defense shouldn't suffer tooo much.
