I only saw the nino high stick in gif form but it looked pretty bad. Totally away from the puck/play so its not like he was trying to establish stick position or anything.
Yeah but that image that was posted by Ohari is similar to watching the old scrambled premium channels so I can't make it out too well. it could easily have been a worse thing but I would need it to be clearer :(

2) This team is a poor 5v5 scoring team and is feasting off of the PP. Last night showed it as the Preds basically clogged the neutral zone. Right now, Canes are 20th in the NHL in 5v5 scoring. Rangers, Ottawa, SJ, Calgary, are all ranked higher than Carolina in 5v5 scoring. I get that this can be skewed with the division set-up this year, but this has been a struggle the last couple of years.

The good news, is that the big 3 5v5 goalscorers in Aho, Svech, and Hamilton haven't really gotten their 5v5 game going yet. Once they start putting up their normal production, this problem will be a lot less of a problem.

THAT WHOLE FOKKEN' SERIES WAS DOOMED FROM THE GET GO.

If I’d known that the whole team was going to get steamrolled from that point forward, I wouldn’t have worried about something as minor as their choice of goalie.

But the dynamic with Mrazek never fails. He’s very good as a tandem goalie, not good (or even healthy) as a workhorse starter. We have an interesting crossroads coming up when Rod has to make a choice what to do with this trio.

Ned got luckier than a cats ninth life he didn't lose it in OT...

I mean yes, but those almost goals that Nashville missed even if they had gone in those would not have been on Ned. Terrible defensive breakdowns from our skaters gave them those great chances that no goalie can be expected to save. The skaters were bailed out more on those than Ned. Ned was fantastic all game, definitely better than his numbers suggested.

There is a bit of a double standard. Many are fond of Mr. Azek because he was in goal when the Canes finally won a playoff series.

Actually it's because Mrazek produced the only time I've ever heard John Forslund orgasm into the mic

On the poke check. It was spectacular over the radio, especially when you've given up when you hear there's a breakaway

Anyway Ned got beat clean three times vs Nashville, one off the bar, one off the post and one hilarious failure to finish. 'Canes were lucky to win that game

Bottom line is that Ned is winning, has a .924/2.21 this season and a .919/2.34 so far in his career. At some point it is more than luck.

Well, hes played 8 games this year, and after the 2nd one this board was ready to jettison him, so its really 6 good games since then.

That's a very small sample size, especially once teams get tape on him and start coaching. Look at Carter Hart.

Yeah, we need to be really careful putting any kind of expectations on Ned right now. There are near-countless examples of goalies having this kind of start and ending up in obscurity only a year or two later. To this day 'Hamburglar' Hammond still has a career .923.

I know some won't agree and I realize this is a bit of raining on the parade, particularly after winning this many in a row, (although I have brought this up prior), but I won't put this team in the "elite" category just yet for 2 reasons. I think this is a very good team and has potential to be elite, and when I say "elite", I mean a cup team:

1) 7 out of the team's 18 wins come in 3v3 or the shoot-out, which isn't a thing in the playoffs. Contrast that to TB which has 3 OT/SO wins out of their 18 wins, Florida which has 4 of 16, Toronto 2 of 16, Islanders 1 of 16, etc.. Boston is probably the next closest and has 5 OT/SO wins out of 13 wins. The good part of this is that it shows the team has skill and a never quit attitude.

These two items are related so to me, the problem with this team is still 5v5 scoring. When the playoffs roll around and the refs swallow their whistles and theirs no 3v3 or shoot out, the Canes need to find a way to put the puck in the net 5v5. They have the talent to do so and getting TT back will be a big help, but for me, until they start performing better offensively 5v5, I'm not ready to call them elite.

The team is solid. They have skill, speed, balance, depth, a will to win and the ability to shut other teams down at times. If they can figure out how to score effectively 5v5, they could be an extremely dangerous team.

While you made good points, and I do agree with your ultimate point that there are cause for concerns with all of these late wins, I think there are other factors too that leads me to believe that we have to take everything as-is this season as far as our flaws and successes.

Even though we have lower 5v5 scoring, I think that could be directly related to the division we play in. I think relative to other divisions, we are competing against more teams that are known for a defensive-style type of play and/or known for goaltending (Tampa, Nashville, Dallas, Columbus). Even Florida has gotten good goaltending and a decent defense on them this year. I think that if we were in any other division, we'd at least be in the upper half of the league in 5 on 5, especially the North division. Also, the Islanders series in 2019 showed we have the ability to win 1-0 or 2-1 games when it matters.

To me, and just like in previous seasons, this team will only go as far as our secondary scoring and goaltending takes us, particularly the secondary scoring. Once the playoffs start, we already know the other team's gameplan is going to be to shutdown the Aho line, and to do things to throw Svechnikov off his game. We're going to eventually have to rely on others to do their fair share. Trocheck has shown vast improvements now that he has games with the team under his belt, and Necas has continued his development as well. But the question is is will we get contribution from Staal, Nino, Foegele when it matters.

When it comes to goaltending, while I don't think it's been a liability in the last couple seasons, I believe there are levels to the position, and until we get clarity as far as a long term #1 other teams will always the goaltending edge on us in the playoffs. Like every team that has playoff success, the goaltender's going to have to steal several games during a long playoff run. While our goalies have been above average, do we have that?

In all seriousness, we're nearing the halfway point. Time to get moving fellas. I think svech is dealing with his first case of being snake bitten for the most part. He's getting SOG, but he's also been around long enough to have ample video on his go to shots. Defenders seem to anticipate the net drive as well. That hasn't been working for him.

Of course there are lots of examples. But I think there are two points that are equally important:

  1. There really is some version of the others imposing low expectations—so we need to be just as careful not to expect that Ned will only ever be an average backup.
  2. Ned has won more than most of the goalies in the sample of examples (Hammond had zero championships prior to the NHL). Everything up to this point indicates that Ned has the ability to win.
That's a very small sample size, especially once teams get tape on him and start coaching. Look at Carter Hart.

Surely the teams facing Hart in the playoffs last season had tape. It is more likely about the individual's confidence/mindset. Lots of players have bad stretches/seasons and rebound. Some never do. But that is as true in golf where opponents can't play to weaknesses as it is in hockey.
Again, Ned has shown elite confidence at multiple levels. From my vantage, expecting Ned to repeat performances at the next level, which he has already done, is just as reasonable as expecting that his success is merely because the league hasn't studied him enough.
