One interesting part of the rules is that a player must be exposed as such:
i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
Assuming the Kings will protect Drew, Muzz, and Amart, the only 3 D left that can possibly meet this is Greene, Forbort, and McNabb. McNabb already meets this but Forbort and Greene do not until they play 40 games this year. So if the season ended today, the Kings would not be allowed to protect McNabb. They would have to expose him, and then would likely protect Forbort. Once Greene or Forbort reaches 40 games, it gives the Kings the best flexibility. But if for some reason they don't reach 40, say goodbye to McNabb. None of this probably happens
