It is extremely rare for a coach to last 10 years and stay on top. Shannahan is getting close 10 years with the Niners and it appears the wheels are coming off. Sometimes you need a reset and often there can be a misstep in hiring the new coach, but sticking with someone becuase you are afraid that the next hire will be worse is sunk cost fallacy at its finest.
The Warriors need to go in a new direction, but they'll stick with Kerr and Curry because Curry is a legend, but the Warriors absent an injsame amount of luck will be staring down the abyss of some horrific seasons and probably will not be good again for over a decade.
That's all fair, but to be clear, my point was simply that just by getting rid of Shanahan you can't guarantee the next guy will be better, let alone just as good. It was never about the fear of what will happen once he leaves. It will be painful regardless. I agree that when an organization reaches a stagnant point it's best to start looking in a new direction, like the Sharks.
If one believes the 49ers have reached that stagnant point with Shanahan in the current dynamic, it makes sense to look in a new direction. I think the 49ers are in a no-win situation. I don't think there's a winning way forward with or without Shanahan. I do agree that Shanahan has a high likelihood of succeeding elsewhere that maybe even provides the same dynamic but has a much different cap situation and talent pool. I just don't think he can pull it off here anymore. And I think it's only making it harder to hold on to the hope when everything about this team trends towards a talent gap forcing a rebuild rather returning back to contendership status.

I think Purdy might be a fraud. Two egregious picks. Moody sucks ass. And defense can't stop a damn.
This season was huge for Purdy. If he played well, have to pay him what the other QBs are making at the top of the league.
Going to be interesting negotiations in the off-season. Purdy would want to get paid after making no serious money. He still has 1 more year left on the rookie deal. Probably going to be a camp hold in or something if a new deal isn't done. Or SF has to reach out to sign someone like Cousins as an insurance policy. Saw that the franchise tag is now $41 mill for 2025. So, if planning on using the tag, that's the floor of cash and cap hit needed for 2026.
Given the circumstances, he did play well. The 49ers choices this offseason should be to either pay him and build around him or trade him and rebuild. There's no good reason to mess around with him. He's a good enough QB if you put the right team around him. They just need to hope they can draft some more talent in the trenches.
Yep. While he is under contract for 2025, fines are based on his contract, so he'd get fined per game check, which based on his contract is 5 figures per game check. Not close to $1 mill or anything.
So, I do expect that he would either not report or not participate if he doesn't get a new contract.
Thus, can't expect to play hardball and expect him to participate in the off-season/camp.
Which, then sets the team back for 2025. So, yes, Either pay him or move on.
Agreed with this. Draft OT round 1, Center round 2, and an OT in 5th round to develop for when Trent retires. Use round 3 and 4 picks on DL and LB + sign a veteran OG in free agency. Trent-Puni-Round 2 Center-Veteran OG-Round 1 OT is a rebuilt OL and then Bosa-veteran FA-Collins-Floyd DL with round 3 DT rotating in and out. We'll see what Lynch and Shanahan do this offseason, but if that's not what they do, this team is f***ed once Purdy gets paid.
PS: If any WR/RB/TE/K/QB get drafted in the first 4 rounds, this front office is stupid
It also sort of depends on who can be cut after next season. I don't mind possibly using a draft pick for someone to develop this year with the intention of replacing someone who will be cut but yeah the focus needs to be on both lines mostly. I wouldn't mind some secondary help and I wouldn't mind a skill position player but it shouldn't be more than one or two picks. But if they use another pick on a kicker because Moody kicked his way off the team, I'll be quite annoyed.
K are very unpredictable. If you review all 32 K on teams, it's a hodge podge of how they landed on their current team. Drafted and cut by original team like Carlson. UDFA like Tucker or veteran free agent like Gould for SF. Still with same drafted team like Butker. No real clear route to get a good K. Just when you do find one, you need to keep them.

Having Gould for years was so nice. Never had to worry about FG. Only that we kicked too many of them because our genius head coach couldn't generate enough offense for TD's.

What will actually happen? DT or WR in 1st. CB in 2nd RB in 3rd. All other picks traded.
All can and will change after free agency. Plus also want to figure out what positions will be available in round 1. That’s who you expect to be a starter in 2025. 2nd rounder should be a sub package player or maybe a starter if you have a hole.
