I'm not making any judgements about Bedard until 2029-30. People judged Stamkos as a rookie and was a captain for two of Tampa's three cups. Jack Hughes had a bad rookie season and is New Jersey's best player.

Bedard is going to be a really good player, can easily become a top 10 player.

But he isn't the next Crosby/McDavid and I don't think he'll get to the Mack's heights either. Most likely he'll be similar to Hughes in his prime, which is nothing to sneeze at.

I'm curious as to whether his ceiling is going to even be that high. Though of similar stature, Hughes is a significantly better skater, being faster, quicker and a hell of a lot shiftier.

Of course the one thing Bedard has that could be his ace in the hole is his all world shot. There may not be a huge margin keeping him from already scoring goals at a high rate, and if he gets just a bit faster, or just a bit stronger, he might be able to start finding the time and space, or gain the shot velocity to beat NHL goalies like he did the goalies in junior.

Also, we can't forget that players don't all develop linearly. MacKinnon would be exhibit A if you're looking for an example.

Ultimately, the fact of the matter is, based on his hype, he's been incredibly disappointing thus far, which remember people isn't the same as saying he isn't a good player.

Side Note: does anyone have a .gif of Bruce riding up the escalator at the mall to get ice cream during the filming of the HBO series?

The problem with many of the modern rebuilds is these kids are on islands without good role models and they develop bad habits/don't learn good ones.

I think it's a bit unfair to compare style of play to Crosby and Ovie though. They are built differently and came into the league playing a gritty brand of game.

I thought Bedard would be more Kariya lite myself but Paul was light-years ahead in his d plus 2 year in terms of his all around game.
What league was PK playing in at 19?

Like a lot of people, I thought Bedard would come in and put up bigger numbers right away (and his numbers for a teenager are still very impressive) but not all players are going to develop at the same rate.

Guys like Crosby and Ovechkin came into the league on day 1 with strength and speed that rivaled the games top players. Bedard has skill, but physically he just isn't on that level right now.

It's still possible Bedard could be the next "generational" type player. If he can get stronger and maybe even a bit faster it will give him more opportunities to show that skill and hopefully take his game to the next level. Even if he doesn't hit that "generational" level, I think he should still be a future 100+ point player with some hardware and a HHOF career.

I don't see enough of the Hawks to make a full or fair evaluation, but the little that I have seen this year wis exactly what Biz was describing after the 2nd period tonight.

On a side note, it is not a fair comparison based on playing time /match-ups, and I am in know way saying he is better than Bedard, but I am quite intrigued with Nazar.

Bedard paired with a good play making centre and with some muscle mass would challange for rocket richards i think.

He’s miscast as a centre at the nhl level and he has nobody to play with so he has to do it all himself. Crazy how he went from insanely hyped to underrated so fast.

He’s 19. I don’t get the negativity.

Whats not to get?

Lets be real here....the reason everyone hates on Bedard is cuz they're jealous their teams didn't draft him and because they hate the Blackhawks. Pure and simple. People are petty and, often times here, immature/young. I mean look at the amount of negative posts raining down from all corners of the universe on just the first page of this thread alone. Its absurd. You'd think the kid was playing awful/a major bust.

And the problem is this....this sort of BS spreads. Like wildfire. And all the clueless idiots just jump on board. They see the slightest bit of adverstiy and then they strike and they don't stop. And it just snowballs from there. He had a rough patch on a god awful team at the beginning of his sophmore/age 19 season in the NHL. Oh the horror. The misery. How will he ever recover from that? FFS...you could argue he already has. If anyone was actually paying attetion they'd notice that he's been playing pretty well since the coaching change. All things considered its a miracle he has as many pts as he does, and again if ANY of these trolls knew a thing they'd realize he's right on track to become AN OUTSTANDING PLAYER in this league. Generational or not. He's gonna be an absolute stud.

But of course they won't ever admit this, or bother paying enough attetion to realize the truth. Because they just hate the Hawks too much. Typical HFboards.

Dude, 70 point pace is not the feather in his cap that you think it is.

I mean f*** me it's not 2004.
70 points as a 19 year old is pretty rare. Kind of beside the point. He had a very bad start. He’s playing pretty well lately. Doing things I rarely have seen in my 30 years of watching hockey. He looks the part especially lately, a special player. Looking forward to the years coming, so much.

And again....what's crazy is HE ISN'T EVEN PLAYING POORLY. He's fine. Like he had a bad first 20-25 games with a horrific head coach that was clearly hindering him. He's been playing well since the coaching change and continues to learn and grow as expected. This idea that he's some sort of failure is just utter nonsense conjured up by those desperate to see him struggle.

lol seriously...."dude 70 pts for a 19 year old on the worst team in the league isn't the feather in his cap that you think it is".....i mean who are we comparing him to, Gretzky? How many 19 year olds have put up 70+pts on teams this bad? Its gotta be a short list.

He’s playing against Mcdavid right now and Mcdavid is playing one of the worst games I’ve seen him play ever
McDavid having a tough stretch lately. Team has bad flu ripping through dressing room, McDavid missed Oilers skills comp on weekend because of it

Stamkos was the best goalscorer in the NHL in his second season. It's not even a close comparison. People in the Bedard is underrated thread said they'd be disappointed if he's not a 140 point player. If you want to compare him to lower tier players, then sure. It's all about what you would expect from him and be happy.

MacK is the only guy who exploded after 4 seasons and even he didn't know he had that potential. If he did, he surely wouldn't have signed long-term at 6.3M.
