Oilers' fans bitching the whole game about the reffing yet their team didn't even get a penalty!
"Nothing about the Jets scare me."
"This Jets team is pathetic."

CSW was good.
Wheeler played hard and fast the whole game. :thumbu:

We were still hemmed into out own end too long, too often. Otherwise good.

Kings fan here in peace.

Great job last night!

How has Trevor Lewis been for you guys this season? I know the stats don't tell the story with a guy like Trevor. I hope he is a big difference maker in this series and the next one!

He is a role player we picked up off the scrap heap, a vet, plays on our 4th line, blocks a young prospect, all of which put him in the dog house with our fan base before the ink dries on his contract. He literally checks all the boxes of an "asset class" that triggers the shit out of a big portion of our fans.

With that being said I think Trevor has been a really consistent, effective asset for the Jets this season including his PK work. With some serious head winds the guy has been begrudgingly accepted by many of our toughest fans who can't stand the aging vets. So he has pulled off the impossible which tells you all you need to know.

I don't mean to be pessimistic to the positivity (a win is great for confidence, and in a series that is actually statistically close outside of the W-L record, could drive a ton of momentum), but it felt like such a weird game to me. Both teams played the first period so slow and dull, but with Jets taking advantage of leeway for finishing hits. Then the Oilers essentially took over the second period with a hard forecheck that the Jets kept dumping the puck out on and just had a ton of turnovers, but on the one play they didn't with Thompson winning the puck battle and Wheeler and Poolman driving the net hard, they get the immediate response goal. Then the third period happened, and it was so slow and dull again as the Oilers stopped their 2-man forecheck, and the chances they generated early on was basically shots from the blueline that Jets easily blocked.

I think Oilers still have a pretty clear path to victory in this series if they play more along the lines of their second period (+ maybe refs call things a bit more tighter after the first game), but a win is a win and gives Jets more time to get the likes of Dubois and Ehlers back which could tip the scales in their favour.

Most interesting coaching decision to me was Maurice putting up the Lowry line against Draisaitl's line more than McDavid's. 81-55-26 all played super conservatively against 97, which really minimized their own offensive chances, which would have been more of a problem had we not gotten these unexpected goals from Poolman and Toninato - and they plus 44-2 and bits of 24-4 essentially stuck like glue on McDavid in the DZ, correctly betting that the refs would simply let some things go. Mind you, McDavid still generated chances out of thin air amidst it all, but missed the net on his own opportunities. It'll be an interesting series, after all.

Oh, and I like Connor Hellebuyck too, did I mention that? He's a good guy.
I wonder if Dave Tippett will lose his nerve if the Jets are able to generate a few more odd man rushes via CSW, especially if they score a couple off odd-man rushes. He already alluded to having to play a more guarded game to prevent those rushes last night. I hope the Oilers feel a bit of pressure and pull back a bit, because I doubt that the Jets' D can withstand heavy pressure from the Oilers over the entire series. As you noted, the Jets' D started to just dump the puck by the second period (especially Forbort and Poolman), and had to defend way more than they are capable of sustaining.

If Ehlers (and Dubois) return, that will put even more pressure on Tippett and the Oilers to decide whether they will tolerate the risk of transition / offense from the Jets to play more aggressively in the Jets' zone (especially pinching D and forwards down low).

Reading the main board, with people complaining that the Jets are making it boring.
Playing McD and Leon the Professional, and missing PLD and Nik......and they are supposed to open things up?
Sure....
Funny thing is Draisatl doesn't really worry me that much. He's a big man that doesn't like to play big (though he protects the puck pretty well). Puju worries me a lot more. McD and Puju, then Drai and RNH - but other than that, what forwards do they have that stoke fear? Yamamoto has wheels but no brain.

I feel like getting back Ehlers and PLD if they are healthy enough to play more than 80% of their healthy state really tips the forward group in our favor.

Went to bed after the second period with game tied 1-1. Hoping for the best. Woke up this morning and see the final score Jets 4 Oilers 1. YAHOO! Go Jets Go!

Impressive first game win on the road where Oilers have last line change advantage. Win the next game and head home to get that advantage. Hope the injured Jets get back soon.

Oh yeah I'm sure everyone in the org is. We've had 18+ for a couple of months now.

That's the game changer. They can do team dinners now and start getting back to very normal NHL routines.

I think it’s why 55 vs 97 and 17 vs 29 worked so well. There really wasn’t much rush chances for the 81-55-26 line except for the odd few because they were playing prevent (alas, McDavid still did generate a few of his own, but not clear and clean ones), and Maurice opted to shut down the only other threatening line with Lowry. IMO, Tippett should go “nuclear” with 97+29 vs 55 and/or 17, knowing that so long as Dubois and Ehlers remain out, the chances of the likes of Toninato and Poolman being the difference makers are truly pretty slim. Of course, it opens the game up a bit for 81-55-26 too, but if it’s more like the 2nd period, they won’t have the energy for breakaways after long stints of defending. The longer this series goes, the better for the Jets - a healthy Ehlers really crushes the depth matchups vs EDM.

An appropriate and interesting question to be sure. But I think Tippett will come to the conclusion that the Jet`s , with acknowledged shortcomings on D, are most vulnerable against a team exerting steady pressure by way of aggressive forecheck and active five man units. In my opinion the Oil will almost surely not be dissuaded by a counter-attacking strategy, unless things fail so badly that scoring opportunities-against come from outright breakaways. Having said that, I think the more interesting question to be answered is whether Tippett will adjust the lineup some to get a much more physical forecheck underway, something that the Jet`s are known to struggle with. This will probably be situation dependent, and of course, dependent on how the officials call the game.

I don't know, I'd really still love to see us start to get under Smith's skin. I think his overzealous puck handling is going to result in at least one or 2 goals against as well.
Yeah, and it seems to me that he kind of interferes with opposing players behind the net, blocking their path instead of getting back to his crease. If goalies want to play defense, then I'd say they need to be treated like D and be open for full contact outside of the crease. The upside of that rule change is that maybe Helle would stay in his crease more... It's really the worst part of his game.

Smith isn’t very good, but he’s played well this year. Koskinen is terrible. It would be huge for us if Koskinen has to come in.

Looks like Dubois is in a regular jersey today so is probably pretty likely for tomorrow.

Ehlers still in non contact but Moe didn't rule him out. I think Ehlers is likely sitting atleast one more game.
Let Nik sit until we lose at least one.
