I’m not an Islander fan, but just an observer who is noticing that Noah Dobson is developing into a fine young defenseman, and being right-handed makes it even sweeter. At this point in his development, he is the second best all-round defenseman from the 2018 draft after Rasmus Dahlin. Although I’m not comparing the two stylistically, is it safe to say that Dobson is the best defender that the Islanders have had SINCE Denis Potvin?

Mark Streit says Hello

Please lock this up. Don’t want anyone talking about him. He’s been blossoming into a bonafide #1 defenseman since last year. His defensive game is coming a long but his offensive game and prowess are already elite. Kids an absolute stud.
I don't get it. Do you think he will be a worse player if people talk about him? Dobson reads this thread, gets over-confident and stops working hard?

I’d rather him stay under the radar but truthfully he’s a stud it’s only a matter of time before he gets his recognition. Kids only 22 and he’s been on a steady trajectory in his development. Hasn’t slowed down and has only gotten better.

I was surprised in 2018 when he dropped to us. It seems after Dahlin there was 4 defensemen who you could interchange with each other but Dobson was sort of the late riser after a solid Memorial Cup run. Of Hughes, Boqvist and Bouchard, I think you could only say Hughes is a better pick at this point and that can change.

He's the closest thing to a young Pietrangelo that you'll find in the NHL. No elite trait (aside from Hockey IQ) yet very good all across the board makes an excellent overall package.

Should have gone top-5 in the 2018 Draft, RHD's like him are impossible to get unless you draft them high.

Quinn Hughes has been underwhelming since his rookie season though :)

NYI had some pretty good D - KJ, Hamrlik, Aucoin, Krupp, etc over the years. Pelech is, right now, a more dominant player. I don't really think it's close.

But Dobson is the best goal scoring D nyi have had since Aucoin, and dobson's shot is much more accurate.

That Hamonic trade has got to be Treliving's worst

While the Flames wouldn't have picked the same guys(although odds are they would have picked Dobson)

  • 2017-Jun-24 (Travis Hamonic) Traded from New York Islanders with conditional round 4 pick in the 2019 draft (Lucas Feuk) to Calgary Flames for round 1 pick in the 2018 draft (Noah Dobson), round 2 pick in the 2018 draft (Ruslan Iskhakov) and conditional round 2 pick in the 2019 draft (Samuel Bolduc)

Ishakov and Bolduc are tearing it up in the AHL this year

What's impressive with the Islanders is they have their best 4 D all drafted and developed with the franchise. Dobson, Pelech, Pulock, Mayfield. Aho coming in now, Salo in the wings, Bolduc already over a PPG in the AHL this year. Romanov was a swift pickup that I think will pay off.

Pelech is such a beast, he makes so much look so easy against top lines. He's now what I thought Lucas Johansen would turn out to be. I think he's still underappreciated around here but I think Isles fans are probably okay with that.

Mayfield looked more like a 90s metal drummer and instead cut his hair and made a living as a very solid shutdown D after all.

Dobson is just scratching the surface. Pietrangelo potential I believe was his draft time projection and I don't have an issue with that 4 years post draft.

Dobson isn’t even the best defensemen on the Islanders right now. He is elite in the offensive zone, decent in transition, and bad defensively. If he weren’t playing in front of the best goalie tandem in the league, he would receive a lot more criticism about his defensive play.

He got snuck a sock in a book.

I'd say he's slightly or a little more below average defensively but yeah, there's definitely work to be done there.

Dobson isn't great without the puck in the defensive zone, but he is very good with the puck. The combo of Dobson/Romanov really can get the puck up the ice very quickly. If he can learn to be a little smarter with his stick & positioning, he'll be able to turn his hands into an asset. It'd be a mistake imo for him to try to turn himself into a physical defender.

At this point, Dobson's development is pretty comparable to the players he's always been compared to - Alex Pietrangelo, and Seth Jones. What's changed since the draft is that those comparison were seen as being aspirational for Dobson, and now they're actual. At the time it was clear that he had the skating, size, and hockey sense. The only question was whether his skills would come along, and they have. I'd bet on that combo every day.

Other teams before NYI should have made the bet on Dobson at the draft. I thought that, and other NYI fans thought that *at the time*, and we were giddy that he fell. I think Bob McKenzie called the pick a layup, and it was.

The thing about NYI right now is that Pelech is a dominant player both against the rush, and in the defensive zone. He was a little off last year (which is evidence for how messed up things got for NYI), but he's back to the form he was in during the 2021 playoffs. I know he'll never get Norris consideration, but he's special.
