Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

Seemed like Trotz gave Dobson a regular shift all game and he clearly deserved it. Let's also not forget that he's playing LD so the degree of difficulty is that much higher. I also like that Trotz gives him #2PP time and he looks pretty good running the point. He does a nice job of getting shots on net and generally looks pretty comfortable.

We should start calling him the Big Smooth, everything he does just looks so efficient. I am really loving his skating, it's plus even for a short guy and he's 6'4. When you combine his length, he's going to be really disruptive defensively. His puck moving ability was eye opening against the Canucks.

He reminds me so much of a young Alex Pietrangelo. Dobson has all the tools to be that good in the future. The combination of his size/skills/hockey iq is very rare

Kid is already one of our best players and he’s still a baby. You can see him getting more confident and better each game.

Dobson is already our best skating RHD and he looks very natural on the PP. He's already looking like a strong transition player, he's going to get even better. No other RD can create the type of separation that Dobson can, it's Leddy-esque. Makes a very nice first pass too, there is very little hesitation in his game now. He still needs another 15 pounds to fully unlock his potential though.

By this time next year, he could be our top offensive d-man. He'll need to grow into a 25+ minute all around beast, very confident it happens in a couple of years.

See, I don't think it's Leddy-esque. I see Leddy spin off a guy and take off with the opposition chasing him in the distance. Dobson is jumping into areas with speed and backing everyone off that way. He hasn't really demonstrated pull away speed and/or that juking that Leddy has. A strong skater but seems more cerebral than instinctual.

Dobson builds speed with each stride like Leddy does, he is able to pull away from the F1 with ease and has enough wiggle to beat the F2. Leddy is in a higher tier of skating ability, but Dobson is 6'4 and is terrifically mobile. I also like that he isn't afraid to join the rush and present himself as an option. He wasn't far off from scoring on that Bailey pass to the net, great decision on his part.

Trotz is doing a nice job of putting Dobson in good situations. PP ability is there and plays 3rd pair minutes with Boychuk. This is not the same player from earlier in the season.

I'll pay attention a little closer, but I haven't seen much of it yet. I 100% agree about his ability to jump up into the play, and he's picking his spots really well. Unlike Leddy, when he gets into the zone he doesn't panic with the puck when he hits the top of the circles either.

My guess is that people are coupling what they want him to be and what they hope he will be with what he actually is.

All the criticism of him sitting in the press box potentially all season instead of playing in Juniors seems like a distant memory. Its funny how the season starts one way and progresses in a completely different path. We were extremely healthy on the blue line last year and started off in a similar fashion. And even this year, we've only had one significant injury (unless you count Hickey who would otherwise be here if not for being injured). All and all, the fact that Aho hasn't had to play yet is pretty fortunate. At the end of the season, Dobson will likely have played over 50 games and probably be well over 15 min TOI. I'm guessing he's going to start playing more in the very near future.

Lol what? He played extremely well last night. That's a bit much
He also played under 13 minutes. He's progressing very nicely - in line with all our high expectations. But agreed - to be one of our best players as a Dman, you have to at least approach 20 minutes ice time. He's still seeing sheltered minutes. The training wheels are coming off slowly - exactly how you want to handle a kid.

My thoughts as well, his game is predicated on intellect.

I commented on Dobson a couple of years ago when I first saw him play in the memorial cup. His game reminds me a lot of Kenny Jonson. His ability to break up play with the stick was top notch along with his smooth skating stride. If he gets to that level in the nhl we have one really defenseman for the next decade.

He does process the game very well. One play there was a delayed penalty and Barzal had the puck trying to create and Dobson got on his horse and made a jump to the net and just about scored. Small sample I know but the kid is getting better and better

I'll take that I think. I loved Kenny Jonsson as a player. I loved him even more when he came back in a tuxedo to get inducted into the Islanders HoF.

It seems like he's exactly that type of player. He was that guy Juniors and after we ease him in as we're doing now, by the start of the 2021 season, when Boychuk is on his way out, he'll be comfortably in that realm. Our right side on D is looking stupid good. 1. Pulock 2. Dobson 3. Mayfield/Wilde.

All I can say is, wait until this kid grows into his frame. Hes going to be a very good first pairing, at the very least a stud second pairing guy. Like how Trotz/Lambert have brought him along.
