Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

This thread title sounds like it could be some movie from the 70s - I'm thinking Richard Benjamin playing a hapless neurotic guy named "Dobson".

I think I've been distanced from hockey for too long....

Bridgeport. Dobson would benefit from the playing time and the responsibilities with the Sound Tigers more than playing sparingly down here. Cap space and who gets shipped out if Lou does make a move certainly factors in where Dobson plays next year and the role he's in. I'd rather not rush the kid, he's projected and capable of being a top D man...he's not there yet. I say let's get him there with some patience. It could pay off short term with some of our D in Bridgeport not being re-signed/retained and it'll be good for the Isles in the long run, he'll be more valuable to us a year from now with his game and himself both more mature.

Bridgeport worked for Pulock, so I think it's a good idea. Give him TONS of minutes, on the PP and PK too. That's what he's used to, getting a ton of ice time. BUT, if the team feels he's made a good 2nd year jump after next year's camp, they will keep him up with the big team. I really think there are no wrong answers, he's just such a good player, he will decide his future by his play.

Yeah it's kinda tough figuring out what our blueline is going to be next season and how Dobson does in these playoffs and camp. He could very well impress in both and earn the spot. No wrong answers at all, hopefully the right decision either way. Cheers.

With Adam Pelech cleared to play, Andy Greene here and Thomas Hickey will surely be added to the expanded roster, I can’t see Noah Dobson getting on the ice in the tournament.

Leddy-Boychuk
Pelech-Pulock
Mayfield-Toews
With Dobson on the roster, I cannot see the Hick sniffing the ice in the tournament.

Getting Pelech back is one of the bigger impacts any team will have from the pushed back season. 22 minutes of shutdown hockey from the 2nd pairing will help get us back on track.

Have to disagree. I can’t imagine Dobson is getting in the lineup over Hickey. Hickey has always been a staple to our bottom pair. He fell victim to an extremely deep defense this year and than nearly got traded earlier this year to be closer to his brother. Now that he is still here you have to think his 450 games, 115 points, +35 and 24 playoff games is getting the spot well before Dobson, who has yet to even play half a season. Hickey is a very Sturdy 5-6 where as Dobson has had growing pains this year (as to be expected) and his never sniffed playoffs. You can’t afford growing pains in the playoffs especially when you have plenty of reliable NHL experience itching to get back in the lineup. Plus, Hickey steps his game up in the playoffs, he becomes a small wrecking ball and is willing to sacrifice himself and put his team first. He also has always been a tremendous leader through out his entire hickey career. Let’s not forget his clutch OT goal vs this same Panthers team a few seasons ago. All that will factor in heavily with a coach as seasoned as Trotz, he knows experience is huge. None of this likely even matters because you would have to imagine right now that either Greene or Mayfield are our number 6/7 depending on who Trotz decides to go with. Hickey and Dobson would be our 8/9 right now. Need 2 dmen out of lineup just to see one of them. Also and maybe the biggest thing, is none of these guys have played hockey in months. Need to see who stayed in shape and how things play out in training camp. Point is I wouldn’t be shocked if Hickey got the nod over Dobson now that everyone is back to square 1. Chances are hickey still gets moved this summer but until then he is very valuable. Hickey would have had his share of Games This season if not for nearly being traded due to family Issues and then injuries that followed. Regardless, the Islanders have an extremely deep team defensively right now with those 3 guys sitting outside our top 6. Maybe the deepest of any team in the playoffs.

Hickey is neither sturdy nor is he a 3rd pair defenseman for any team with Cup aspirations.

Great team guy, busts his ass out there, but Thomas Hickey is a veteran backup. An insurance policy in case someone gets hurt.

His statistics and play in his time here says otherwise. Every Stanley cup team ever has a player in the 6 spot that is just as good as Thomas Hickey. He isn’t a number 7 with us right now because of the addition of Greene. But him and Dobson would’ve been rotating games had he not got hurt. We also have an extremely deep defensive team. Agree to disagree. I know some aren’t high on a hickey and some see him as a bottom pair and that’s me. We will see what happens. Hopefully we don’t need to dip outside our top 6 come playoffs.

Hickey's time as a regular was finished after last season, it spoke volumes that he was sent to the AHL after training camp this year. The injuries were unfortunate for him this year, but his greatest contribution was to be a big brother for the kids in the AHL. I think that was the plan for him going into training camp.

If we ever see Hickey suit up again for the Isles then we have a big problem. I salute him for everything he has done, but he is at best the #9D currently and likely behind Aho and maybe even Hutton when push comes to shove.

He was sent down to the Minors because he was going to be traded to be closer to his brother and with Dobson looking good there was no reason to bring him up. Also if I can find the article I will add it in, but I remember Staple or someone stated he was all but traded and got hurt in a game and the deal was off the table. Only reason he was down there was because he was on his way out for family reasons. They didn’t want him around the guys at that time, not to mention his mind was probably else where. We are so quick to just view these guys as robots because they are just a name to us..imagine what day to day life would be like knowing your brother is slowly dying after hearing his treatments failed, let alone a NHL training camp. I’m sure all these things played a part. The guy is still a bottom pair Dman and I have no doubt we will see him doing well on another team come next season. That’s what happens when you are as deep as we are, as it is the Islanders will have more tough decisions to make. Towes, Pulock, Pelech, Mayfield, Leddy, Boychuk. That doesn’t include Greene(If he resigns for a year), Dobson, Hickey. After that you have Aho who is as ready as he is going to be then Wotherspoon and Wilde not far behind. Isles have some decisions to be made and they need offense. Hickey may not be the only one who fails victim to a deep defense this off season lol whenever that actually happens to be.

I don't recall any trade rumors involving Hickey, but I'll take your word for it. Seems like you know him personally and the situation way better than I do. I definitely do feel for the guy, end stage cancer is a horrible thing to have to deal with. I have never been a big fan of his game, but I definitely do appreciate everything he has done. I have made fun of his stature and game over the years, but the dude has a ton of heart and balls that scrape the ground. I do wish him and his family well.

As for the hockey aspect, I hope he does latch on somewhere else and can contribute. I just think his days as an Isle are over, he doesn't fit anymore. He's not offensive and lacks the skating and skill to be in that role for this defense group. He is not a PK'er either. He is smart though and should be able to help mentor a young partner on a rebuilding team on a 3rd pair, pretty much what he did for the Isles during his tenure.

Dobson is the future, I think Leddy is the one who goes and effectively blocks any other offensive types like Aho despite Dobson being a RHD. Trotz has specific roles for his players and in the short term, the kid fits the role of an offensive guy who will get PP time and easier ES matchups. The defensive stalwarts like Pulock, Pelech, Greene (if re-signed), Mayfield, and Toews (to a degree) are all safe. Boychuk isn't going anywhere due to his contract for another year.

He was sent down because they weren't going to carry that many extra defensemen since Dobson couldn't be sent to the AHL game. I don't recall hearing those rumors either.

I have zero reason to lie about this lol I could care less. Its fine you haven’t seen it, I did. It was in an article a while back but I can’t remember who. He was all but gone in a trade because of his brother (like hammer) If I find it I will post. In the mean time everyone is welcome to think what they would like, even after lol idc

I haven't seen any Hickey trade news or rumors either. No reason to get all uptight towards PK. Happy 4th to all .Stay safe ...

I didn't say you were lying, just that I didn't see those rumors and that there were other reasons for him being sent down that were less speculative. All of us here are pretty up to date on rumors and the latest happenings with this team, so I just think it's odd that a few regulars who are typically on top of news like that do not recall such an article. I'm wondering if it was from one of those blogs that doesn't have credible sources or whatever.

No mention of it in this Athletic article (if you have a subscription): Goodbye Josh Ho-Sang and Thomas Hickey? Islanders move...

This Eyes on isles blog mentions possibly trading him, but not that anything was imminent: New York Islanders Could Still Trade Thomas Hickey

This isn't meant to be accusatory or anything, I'd just be interested in the information if it were found. We all read so much shit sometimes it mushes together.

It's probably best if Dobson gets Boychuck's spot next season. The Isles have 10M+ to sign Toews, Barzal, and Pulock. They will have to move one of Leddy or Boychuck to make it work. Dobson is ready, time for him to take the next step.

I don’t know that Dobson is ready for a full NHL season yet.

He’s shown flashes in sheltered ice time which is great to see but I’m not ready to give him Johnny Boychuk’s spot yet, especially if Andy Greene is not set to return to the Island.

Depending on the camp Dobson has next fall/winter, he might be best served by starting the season in Bridgeport.
