Speculation: Noah Dobson Fires Agent; Heads to Judd Moldaver at Wasserman

Have to imagine this has something to do with the advice his previous agent gave him about taking that sort of weird "in between" bridge type deal, with the promise of bigtime cashing in at the end of it - and presumably negotiations aren't looking as insanely lucrative as promised? Or...?

He's going to be a tricky contract to negotiate in any event. He's got all the "counting stats" to garner an absolute megadeal...but the defensive play still isn't there at that 1D sort of level to justify it completely.

Michael Myers? Done.

That being said, Lou is rumored to only want to move Dobson for an equally touted forward.

Don’t know who that could be? 23-26 year old elite offensive/scoring skills.

I dont think youre gonna get a 1st and two top 15 prospects thats not in the NHL.

Fair enough though. Dobson is a good player.

"Hey Lou, this is Kent Hughes from the Montreal Canadiens...I hear you're looking for a highly skilled young forward that can snipe with the best of 'em...as it happens, I have this kid named Laine, former 2nd Overall pick a few years ago...kid's got an amazing shot and is a real TEAM FIRST guy...so why don't I just get the paperwork ready and you let Noah Dobson know he's on his way to Montreal...really think you're gonna luv this Laine kid, Lou; he's something..."

...yes, I'm well aware that Lou's dementia isn't quite THAT bad yet...but it never hurts to try... :biglaugh:

Honestly wouldn’t be shocked at Laine +++. You dump your misfit toys on us with a pick. Laine + Dach + 1st + Reinbacher. 3 former top 5 picks, how could Lou turn it down?!?!

Make it Mailloux + 2nd instead of Reinbacher and it's a done deal.

What about ANA?

Different conference, loads of young offensive/scoring skills, and no clear/proven #1 D (IMO). Seems like an ideal fit. It'll be difficult to find 1-to-1 value in a trade w/ any team, but maybe something involving Zegras? Not a NYI/ANA fan so I won't speak to who's adding, etc. etc.

Something either went really wrong in his development or he’s not being utilized properly
The islanders handled Dobson as well as they've handled any prospect/young player in recent memory. Heck, they brough it Chara specifically to mentor him, and they traded a 1st round pick for a quick skating physically punishing left side partner.

imo his struggles this year may be a result of playing way too much last year, which were a result of injuries. And that can happen anywhere.

The truth about Dobson is that he's a guy who has one exceptional skill - his ability in transition. He's like Pietrangelo, but his defensive game hasn't rounded out, and he' suffers playing big minutes over long stretches. He's meh on the PP - his shot is inconsistent, he's a good passer, but not an especially nimble handler. His skating is great, but that suffers when he plays 25 a night.

imo being partnered with a guy like Romanov should be ideal, but it's become clear that the communication problems/defensive mishaps were on Dobson. Romanov would sometimes seem to run around & chase, And it's really become clear that it was because Dobson was e.g. slow to slide when he needed to.

First, Second, Mailloux, Dach and Laine?

It honestly would make sense to me, especially with it seeming more and more like Nelson is leaving along with Palmieri. This would be an ultimate retool type move assuming you can get another 1st, 2nd, and prospect between Nelson and Palmieri - that's potentially 6 picks in the first two rounds with 5 of them in the top 45. Laine and Dach plug the holes in the top 6 for now; if it works it works, and if it doesn't you deal Laine at next year's deadline. It's enough pieces to cover your ass.

That being said, Laine and Mailloux don't really seem like Lou types and that'll probably keep something like that from happening. I'd go for this though.
