Wtf is nylander supposed to do on the shorty? It was a fail by the whole unit and ends with a bouncing puck into nylanders skates for an easy pick.

And omg how dare a most likely hart finalist blow by nylander 5 on 5. Draisaitl can make even the selke winner look foolish at times. Nylander will never be elite defensively but let's not exaggerate what happened tonight.

Heh,

Fun fact about that play. It was the only scoring chance the Leafs allowed all night with Nylander on the ice.

Yea, its keystone cops out there on that play. I put more blame on Andersen as he starts the whole debacle.
It was totally Anderson's fault, Rielly had Draisaitl right on top of him and clearly wanted Freddy to move it anywhere else, not just leave it there up for grabs.

Are we watching the same game?

You think that was a good pass? RNH barely even touched it, he had to look between his feet to get it and then subsequently got bumped by Tavares. He's lucky Tavares didn't lay him out, that was a suicide pass.

I mean, they probably lose the game anyway but the guy is as dumb as a brick. Look how much open space he had, he wasted 5 seconds (down 1 goal) and that's the best idea he can come up with.

Yeah, that's the guy we all remember. He's lucky if RNH didn't punch him when they got off the ice.

Ok, I will bite.
Willy was on for the shorty. That goal must be a scoring chance.
And the first shift of the game when Willy was blown by was a scoring chance.

Not sure about any in between but that has to be 2.

Hey guys, seeing as Barrie was with your team before joining the Oilers, I have to ask, was he this slow of a skater for you guys? I anticipated that he'd be a better skater than he has been so far. If he doesn't up his game he will likely be joining his 3rd team in 3 seasons after this season.

I don't remember skating ever being an issue.

He was mostly criticized for making low IQ plays, losing EVERY board battle, and regularly taking shifts off where he might as well not have been there.

Thanks, I figured that he'd be a dynamic skater and he has been anything but.

I never considered his skating an issue. Weak defensive play, lack of physicality, and low IQ plays is what drove us up a wall.

This team is finding ways to win, even if it isn't pretty. And it's not so much this team is getting lucky by playing terribly and happening to win.

The Ottawa and Jets win were games they should have destroyed the opponent, but couldn't get the bounces, but still held the other team off. The Oilers win was one were it was even, maybe they were even slightly worse than the opponent, but they still held them off.

All the wins have been by 1 or 2, meaning they have practiced playing meaningful minutes late in the game.

Even the loses, Ottawa wasn't great, but it was really a bad period that did then in. The Edmonton loss they couldn't generate, yet still played very, very well defensively.

Everything I described makes me think of playoff hockey. They are going to have to win the close ones, whether it means holding the other team off during a hard fought game, or being the team who made that one extra play to get the win.

They are getting practice doing this now, which is great. And they are doing it against teams they are likely to be playing in the playoffs.

Yes, I'd like a 5-1 win here and there too (the Ottawa and Winnipeg games could have easily been). But odds are those wins are coming, they are due. But until then, finding ways to win in different but close scenarios is very good practice for the playoffs.

After 6 games, 4-2 is the exact record I expected. The only difference is I expected the first loss vs. Montreal rather than Ottawa, but the other win vs. the Sens, the win vs. the Jets and a split vs. Edmonton all make sense to me at this point.

That is why I love the weekend. Time to focus on the Leafs-game instead of watching the first period on my phone while driving, mostly listening to the commentary off course and the rest while starting up work for the day.

I thought it was a pretty good win for our boys. They played a solid game apart from the first few minutes and a couple om moments where they were hemmed into their own zone a bit too long for my liking. Andersen made the crucial saves early on and and was solid throughout the game.

For the first time I actually noticed and liked Barabanov's game, to name someone that is not discussed here much. Hyman was very, very good in my opinion, Nylander had brilliant moments and I think the analysts focus bit too much on the negative with him. Mikheyev is starting to warm up too and Engvall had a good debut as well. Congratulations to Adam Brooks for his first goal.

Thank you all for your contributions here after the games, positive and negative, I love reading other people's thoughts of the matches and to feel part of a Leafs-community. Sunday against Calgary the game will be played at 22.00h Central European Time, so finally a chance for me to catch a live game.

Let's pray the Buds show up Sunday. They've been far too inconsistent so far this year. Same shit every year it seems like.

Thanks, I figured that he'd be a dynamic skater and he has been anything but.

Barrie has been completely unmotivated since leaving Colorado. Not sure why. His general effort level on the ice has been non existent despite entering a contract year.

There were flashes after Babcock was fired but that only lasted a few games.

He might be one of these guys who is not self motivated and requires special coaching.

#FreeAnderson

#FreeBoyd

Vesey-Matthews-Nylander
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Engvall
Anderson-Brooks-Boyd
I like the lines and I’d definitely give it a try. I’m a huge Boyd fan. I’m not convinced about Brooks, I thought he had an ok game. Engvall and Mikheyev were terrific, speed and size. I still like Simmons on the fourth line just in case we need that toughness element.

The depth players really stepped up it's good to finally see some secondary scoring, not just Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares, I know Marner, Nylander and Tavares got their points too but what's even better is seeing Vesey, Kerfoot and Brooks pick up the slack with Matthews out.

hopefully the PP never slows down because that's carrying us right now

Yea, the stats guys must have missed that one for Willy. It happens. Hell, let's say they missed another one and give him 3......matched up against the current Art Ross/MVP. Relly solid defensive play from that line tonight. Just seemed like an odd thing for anyone to complain about as it was one of the biggest reasons for the win tonight.

Engvall should be a fixture in the bottom 6 if he keeps playing like that.

I also think Mikheyev is ready for an extended look in the top 6.

Idk about the cap situation but even when Matthews and Jumbo come back to me Engvall is one of our best 12 forwards.

His skating was my biggest disappointment with him. Especially stopping/starting, first step, acceleration. Made it hard for him to be first to loose pucks or to recover when getting beat. Especially not a great combo with his lack of strength.

His puckhandling and passing was good though.

Oh and I guess I was also disappointed with his inability to get pucks through traffic on net from the point. Pretty frustrating sometimes.

His skating was not spectacular here. It wasn't a problem though.

His problems is hockey IQ and defensive awareness
