No fans

In all fairness we really haven't had games since 2012. 2021 was no fans and 2022 wasn't exactly a lot of action

That's fair, though I still don't think that the novelty is there. The Canadian market as a whole needs to breathe a bit when it comes to the WJC, and that includes the pseudo-Canadian tournaments that are held in the US near the border. Let the other countries build an in person audience for the tournament, let Canada develop some hunger to host again, and let TSN scramble for ratings after the bullshit coverage it is now devoting to the tournament.

If you’re overlooking people’s animosity towards Hockey Canada at the moment, you do NOT understand what’s going on in this country right now.
I’m Canadian and for me personally, if I was in the area to go to a game and it was reasonably priced, the Canada jr. controversray would not deter me one bit. I just don’t care

Most people are using vacation time to do camping and travelling. If not they’re working.
Either way I wouldn’t go for free. Enjoyed seeing those empty seats because those greedy c****suckers

Doesn’t deter me either. But it does deter a lot of other people. There is an article just from today on CBC.ca on why Canada shouldn’t be hosting this tournament. There is a big push from many (a lot of them mothers) against hockey culture right now and HC in particular, and it has affected this tournament in a lot of ways.

The article you referenced is a bit extreme if you ask me. That being said, I think the fact it’s summer in Alberta (with a big cottage culture) and ludicrous prices are putting people off

They've gotten too greedy with ticket prices. The tournament isn't the draw it once was. Even in August, if the tickets were $20, I'd catch a few games. I remember watching 16 year old Ovechkin in Toronto at the World's for $8.
Did Ovechkin ever play in Toronto before the NHL?

They should have gave free tickets to local minor hockey teams to help fill the building.

When I turned it on briefly yesterday and saw no fans I thought it was because of COVID.

Because it’s a crap tournament in the middle of Summer without a top team and missing one of the two potential generational players in the next draft

For Canada fans, no Canada - Russia rivalry and nearly every game will be a blow out win for Canada, where’s the incentive to watch ?

Also, the sexual scandals might have a toll too.
Imagine genuinely believing that the low attendance is due to Russia's absence.

Me and my wife are from the states and highly considered making the trip to watch every game that we could in a week or so period. Until we seen the ticket prices. Obviously aware any game involving Canada would be expensive, I get that. They have all the right in the world to raise prices relative to the max amount people are willing to pay that still fill the seats. I would have watched all the games available, but I'm not paying $50+ dollars per ticket to watch off teams especially considering only 18 seats are filled. That is absolute madness. Reguardless of money itself, I just can't even support that concept even if I felt like throwing money around.

Way to rob the players of the energy of having fans in the building and way to rob the people who could be sitting in those seats for a fair price. Way to rob the oppertunity of getting potentiolly new fans into those seats.

After realizing they have 18 fans in the building, they should be all over the local radios saying get your ass down here and support these kids and hockey. 5$ a seat at the gate.

All of the concessions they lose out on as well. 18 fans at 100$ or 10,000 fans at 5-10$ with many of those buying concessions and other merchandise. Plus parking and potentially bringing in revenue eating at local restaurants and bars.

Obviously it’s extreme, and I in no way condone the ideas in that article, but my point was that there are a lot of people angry at Hockey Canada and thre is a big push from a large segment of the population and even media outlets for a boycott of Canadian hockey at the moment. There is no question that is hurting attendance along with the ticket prices and summer scheduling of this event.

None of that will hurt my enjoyment of this tournament and I hope most on this forum feel the same.

Imagine genuinely believing that the low attendance is due to Russia's absence.
If you truly think that’s not one of the factors, you’re mistaken.

1. Russians living in Canada / US won’t attend, Russians from Russia won’t arrive to Canada to attend
2. More local fans would go to a bigger name games like Canada - Russia or USA - Russia
3. More local fans would go to watch next draft players on team Russia

I know Russians like to hold on to the image of being as competitive as the Soviet Union back in the day but Russia has won exactly one gold medal after 2003 and even that was 11 years ago. I also don't imagine that "Russians living in Canada / US" would constitute a particularly large segment of fans.

Regardless, the attendance would be even lower if this fascist country was allowed to ice a team in this tournament.

It will hurt attendance in games where Russia would have played rather than Latvia, yes. Russia is a draw in a way that Latvia isn't. I don't think Russia being absent has any impact on terrible attendance for Slovakia vs Czechia though. Certainly tonight's Canada vs Latvia game would be much more interesting if it was Canada vs Russia.

Russia won more medals than any other nation since 2011, so yeah, the team is usually pretty competitive.

Even 5-10% of the Russian fans would give a bump to the attendance.

Were you also as vocal and boycotting the US hockey in 2003?

There's a lot more Ukrainians than Russians in Edmonton (nearly five times the total). There would have been protests.

You are correct, but it certainly adds a factor of lower attendance which was my point.
The tournament as a whole diminished its value since a top 4 nation is missing.

They can protest all they want for all I care, I want to watch hockey and not politics.

Does the local organizing committee have any input?

That wasn't Canada, that was the IIHF.
That wasn't just the IIHF it was Canada and their protocols. Whoever is in charge - whether its IIHF or Hockey Canada they are failing.
