Confirmed with Link: Njdevils Acquire Cody Glass Per Friedman

With the crazy discourse being thrown at Canada and the economic implications that may occur, I wonder if the cap doesn’t really go up as much as people are thinking?

There's a ton of lag time with the salary cap - the economy fell apart in summer 2008 but it wasn't until 2009 that the cap effects were felt. The economy technically hasn't even started falling apart yet, though it will soon - the impacts on 2026-27 might be real, but 2027-28 for sure.

I don’t foresee moving Haula making sense. He’s not so bad or overpaid that you should attach assets to move him.

If you buy him out, the savings is 1.6 million next year and an 800k cap hit the following year. I’m doubtful you find comfortably find a better UFA than Haula at a 1.6 million cap hit.

Moving Palat would be the substantial difference maker. I wonder if the Devils could do something where they retain ~2 million and take back Sheary and Girgensons from Tampa. Net cap savings of 1 million for the Devils next year and both Sheary and Girgensons could be buried in the minors to free up an additional 2 million, if need be. Given the Devils could bury both, I could see the argument for retaining 3 million on Palat too.
For 1.6m savings, id rather bury him in the AHL for... 1.1m savings I think? And not take the hit the following year.

He's now missed 4 straight games with an unclear injury. Apparently injury woes have followed him throughout his career. Sucks, I liked his game and how he fit in but I think this might be why he was attainable, and makes re-signing him a dicier proposition.

I would acquire 3 centers this summer.

-An appropriate 3C (with limited 2C potential) (cost: HIGH = Casey/Nemec+, no UFA options)

-An appropriate 4C (with limited 3C potential) (cost: LOW = Draft picks or UFA options (<2M)) OR Cody Glass (cost: 3M x 1 year)

-13th forward C/RW (cost: LOW = draft picks or UFA options (<1.5M) OR Curtis Lazar (1M x 1 year)

He spoke of a suffering concussions, I hope it’s not related to that.

I think he's easy to re-sign given he is still an RFA and wouldn't come at an expensive cost. Just a matter of needing other bodies at the same time. Might be best reserved as our 4C option next year with a viable depth forward that can fill in behind him.

NHL team lying about the area of an undisclosed injury? Never

I don’t think k they outright lie about location that way. They might call a massive stroke an upper body injury and a leg amputation as a lower body injury (week to week) but I don’t think they’d call a concussion a lower body injury. We will see. He at least skated yesterday and my recollection is the one comment we got was that he might have played when NJ traveled to play Winnipeg and Minnesota so hopefully it’s not bad.

Yea, can’t believe he is 1 and done here as he is both right handed and can play center which makes him a very viable option for our bottom line next year.

Biggest issue to resigning Glass is he would have arb rights and a QO of at least 2.5 million.

Devils either have to pay him that much next year, convince him to take a longer term deal for security for a lower AAV, or not qualify him, play hard ball at a lower salary, and risk losing him altogether.

To me this is pretty straightforward. You offer him the one year deal at the $2.5 mil. Assuming you like him you also offer him three years at say $2 mil per. So he gets a bit more on a one year deal but given his career trajectory a few years of stability and security make a lot of sense.

The Devils will not be qualifying Glass. I expect they will have something worked out by July 1.

Ideally Glass is the 4th best natural center on you roster. If he needs to play as 3C for a year or two while we find that #3 guy then so be it, but having Cody Glass be one Jack Hughes shoulder injury away from being a top-6 player and PP guy is asking for disaster.

We should be going into next year with Glass as our 5th best center IMO - he can move outside otherwise but with Jack and Nico good for plenty of missed games I want a legitimate 3rd line center.

That sounds hard, and I agree, but with Jack and Nico good for a few missed games per year I don’t want to be in this position again. Sign/trade for centers, and play them outside.

Probably not many teams that would be looking for a guy like Glass at 2 mil. Probably could rule out Nashville/Pittsburgh. As others said, not giving a QO but offering a two year deal might be amenable.

A fairly common timeline for high end prospects who bust is something along the lines of: Period of poor play - period of good play - injury - return from injury and struggle.

Hopefully he comes back soon and can regain the form he showed prior. Even if we don't resign him next year him playing well in the playoffs would be a boon for us.
