Confirmed with Link: #NJDevils acquire Cody Glass, per Friedman

I think Haula is going to be the fourth line center next season. If NJ keeps Glass it likely means he had a nice finish to the season and they are probably going to have to pay him something around his qualifying offer. At approximately $2.5 mil they can't really swing a more expensive 3C (unless you count Hischier in that role but I digress). The cap will be tight next year with a Luke extension. I know folks were hoping for less than $9 mil per, but I expect it to be closer to $10 mil per. They are still constrained for another year until they can get rid of Palat and Haula both.
I think Haula is a buyout, barring some humpty heater to end the season. A la the Cory Schneider second half in 2019.

And I think they’ll be less hesitant to pull the trigger on that than the many millions and 3 years (at that time) that were left on that deal in 2019.

Do they really save anything though? Is the $1.5 mil going to matter when they likely have to spend that just to get a similarly mediocre player?

Refresh my memory, buyouts are 2/3 contract value spread out over twice the remaining contract time, right? And we can have 3 buyouts?

no limit on the # of buyouts. I think you are thinking of # of retention slots being 3.

Crow!!! Come get your crow!!!
I'm still waiting for the 10 game mark.

He seems like a great personality regardless so as far as a teammate and locker room guy - no issues. We're still in the honeymoon phase and almost everyone looks good the first few games when trying to fit in and impress the core roster and coach.

Any dude that brings up his wife out of the gate on what the change has been like is gonna get big bonus points and benefit of the doubt from me. Selflessness is a hallmark of great players.

It's a head scratcher of a trade. I'm not sure why the Pens willingly gave him up, within the division.

Seems a good kid. Big body. Skates well enough. Could be a great opportunity here for him.
Because there was no way they were going to qualify him at 2.5 for essentially a 4th liner.

I'm not sure we should either....just being honest.

Does anybody know if Cody is related to George Glass?

I thought this was a sneaky good under-the-radar trade when it happened. In a worst case scenario, Cody is a solid 4C and upgrade over Lazar. There is some untapped offensive potential though if he can figure things out. Like others have said, Nashville and Vegas were not the greatest landing spots. In some ways, Glass is similar to McLeod. Both were high draft picks who didn’t develop their offensive games as hoped for but carved out a niche as quality defensive players. It’s ironic to me if Glass does effectively wind up as the McLeod replacement. I can see Cody’s offensive game continuing to improve. He’s a big dude, skates very well for his size and has a plus shot. He has all of the tools.

I also remember Devils scouts speaking glowingly about Glass the year he was drafted. I’m not really surprised by the Devils acquiring him. I strongly suspect he’s been a player of interest for a long time.

It seems like a conundrum...that kind of money he has to be able to be able to play 3C but his track record doesn't really look 3C.

It almost seems like a "force fit" scenario.
Def is because if Devils want to target a 3c with a long track record then that will cost assets in a trade or a high cap hit in free agency

I think its worth a gamble if Cody consistently shows good play worthy of 3C

I didn't know the full return but I'm more upset about trading Graham then Stillman.

Not that I'm upset about trading Graham but you know what I spraying.

That was one of the best parts of the trade. Trade Graham less than a year of acquiring him. Keefe has banished MacDermid from the ice and probably chewed out Fitz for getting enforcers.

literally anyone
I get it but you know that's hyperbole. Maybe they can find someone better for the available cap but my guess is it's some similarly older broken down player who the fanbase will find just as frustrating. We will see. I still think Haula is suffering from whatever injury he had that kept him out for a while. I would not be shocked if he bounced back next season to at least where he had been last season.

That's what a good 4th line center is. A guy who can hopefully play up on the 3rd line if there are injuries. The Devils need another center to play ahead of Glass.
If Glass continues, having him at 3C and signing Sturm for 4C wouldn’t be bad.

As much as I like Glass and his potential, I don’t think the Devils should pencil him as next year’s 3C based on 20 or so games. That spot was such a glaring black hole and it’d be wise to sign a more proven commodity. We simply must get consistent enough production at 3C and not a guy who will weigh others down. Glass as 4C is terrific but I do get the financial aspect of the situation.

EDIT- I will be dealing with Haula PTSD for a long time.

Nico better be the 3c next year. Best 3c in the league.

No I mean a legit 3rd liner. I think there is a chance of that happening.
