Only because of the cap hit. Staal is a better d-man.

Yeah I've never thought of Staal as a bad defenseman. Although I always thought he would end up being a better point producer. I know he doesn't get PP time but if you would of told me his career high in points would be 29 when he was drafted I wouldn't have believed you.

Don't know much about him but judging by all these posts its yet another low risk/ decent reward signing by Shero. Ill take it since our D-core is a bit thin with experienced players.

He got a little slower, and never really adapted to joining rushes and creating offense. Also, he doesn't shoot enough. He gets some decent wood on his slapshots, (Yeah, I know it's not wood anymore), but for the amount of minutes he gets, he can't be outside the top 100 in shots for a D-man.

In his defense, you also did say "nobody wanted him" which you have absolutely nothing to back that up. Quincey could've been in discussions with other teams as well. That's like saying that nobody wants Russel because he's not signed yet.

Nobody wanted him at the price he was looking for. That's close enough.

Would you been happy if he signed for 3-4 million per year for a 3-4 year deal? Probably not.

All he was saying is that there wasn't really a market for him so you got him for cheap. What's there to be shocked about? I'm not.

I didn't think he was all that good in Detroit. Maybe he's worth it in a reduced role at a reduced salary. Who knows.

3 Cups and 5 Finals in less than 35 years is damn good. Took over 10 years to build up that core and it was solid for a good 15 or so years.

The Rangers also had one great core in that timeframe, though have only 1 Cup and Finals appearance to show for it.

So the Devils replace Adam Larsson with Kyle Quincey on the defense.

Not really - no one is replacing Larsson, though hopefully Severson can step in his game to eat some of the minutes. Defensively, Lovejoy and Quincey will help fill the gap left by Larsson this season. Long-term, perhaps Santini can fill that role.

They also have Taylor freakin' Hall.

Quincey is a fine enough defenseman. For a team that needs defensive depth, Quincey is a solid option for a 3rd pair and can play spot duty in the top-four if need be. at 1.25 million, I don't see any reason to complain.

His problem has always been telegraphing his shots. Too slow to shoot it. It almost always winds up in the skates or deflecting off the stick of the defender in front of him. If he would cut it loose quicker, it might wind up in the white net more than the one above the glass.

So the Devils replace Adam Larsson with Kyle Quincey on the defense.

Not that simple. Here's the ins and outs since the trade deadline.

Defense Out: Adam Larsson, David Schlemko, Eric Gelinas, David Warsofsky

Defense In: Ben Lovejoy, Kyle Quincey, Brandon Gormley,

Possible Prospects Making Team: Steve Santini, Yohann Auvitu

Forwards Out: Stephen Gionta, Patrik Elias, Tyler Kennedy, Lee Stempniak, Bobby Farnham, Jordin Tootoo, Jiri Tlusty, Brian O'Neill, Stefan Matteau, Tuomo Ruutu

Forwards In: Devante Smith-Pelley, Taylor Hall, Vernon Fiddler, Beau Bennett, Luke Gazdic

Possible Prospects Making Team: Pavel Zacha, Mark Lappin, Joseph Blandisi, Reid Boucher

What Ray Shero has done to transform this team is amazing. The Hall and Palmieri trades along are amazing. Larsson has huge potential and was already a rock on defense.... but signing Lovejoy and Quincey are solid pickups that help TEAM DEFENSE allowing Andy Greene and Damon Severson to explore more offensively. With a top six of Hall, Henrique, DSP, Cammalleri, Zajac, and Palmieri, the Devils are going to surprise a lot of people this year.

Severson is stepping into Larsson's spot with Greene on the top pairing. Also Quincy has a left handed shot so how on earth is he replacing Larsson? We have a rookie RHD in Santini which is why a lot of Devils fans think Shero was willing to part with Larsson. Quincey will be on the third pairing and second pairing at best. We've won division championships with much worse defense cores than this, add Schneider and we'll be fine. I love this signing especially for the price.

Yeah I watch many ranger games being a Devils fan and you're right I can't remember him ever joining the rush. Guess he just doesn't have that instinct. He's still effective with that long reach and size of his down low and on the PK. Girardi is a whole different subject and I thought Sather made the right choice signing him over Callahan. I thought Callahan was going to break down at a young age because of his size and style and Girardi was looking like one of the better defensman in the league at the time. You never know I guess.

Also a very slim chance for Helgeson also.

I don't think Mozik has a chance to slow with his decision making. He destined for the ahl with Gormley that or he heads back to the Czech Republic, maybe a 7th defense at best. He just does not impress me at all.

That's what I think about Helgeson, but you never know.

I can't even think of a good Rangers core when there were only 6 teams.[/QUOTE

It doesn't even make much sense. The difference between the 95 and 2003 teams player wise is massive. Brodeur and Stevens were the constants. Brylin and Niedermayer were not even close to the players they ended up becoming, especially Niedermayer. Plus Daneyko was a shell of himself by 2003. He was a healthy scratch that playoff run. As for the Rangers I think their best core in 50 years, sans 94 is what they've had since 2012 to now and I don't think a cup is on the horizon. But stranger things have happened and they still have Henrik. So I would never count them out.
