Yeah, on top of Jack Hughes being out for the rest of the year... this deal is complete idiocy from New Jersey.

I'd get it if he still had a year left on his contract, but.... yeah. That's not really the case. This is such a weird trade. The Devils think they'll go on a playoff run without Jack.

New Jersey is doing this after helping retain salary on a guy yesterday. Does this organization know what they're doing?

Anaheim did extremely well with asset management.

They're trying to make the playoffs even if a deep run isn't necessarily likely without Hughes. There can be ownership pressures to make the playoffs since there's revenue to be had from home games. I know we like to think of it as Cup or bust, but it is still a business.

They retained yesterday to gain an asset since we weren't using any retention spots. We'll see what else the Devils do tomorrow to see if the retention on Dumoulin ended up being necessary but for now it does give them a little more flexibility to make another move.

Anaheim did well though, not disputing that. But at this point, making the playoffs is a target for the Devils. Would send a bad message to the locker room if they packed it in after the Hughes/Hamilton injuries. I love the draft, but a late 2nd isn't something I'd get hot and bothered about especially if this class is below average as has been the indication.

If you are going to make this move.. this will not be their only move. Has to be something in the works for at least one more center... maybe two.

That's literally why you don't do this trade.

But missing Hamilton and Siegenthaler is probably WHY you would make this trade. But without your best player coming back? You're moving yourself further out of the draft and are still probably a first or second round exit regardless of what you did at the trade deadline.

The Devils are NOT a championship contending team, they can't get away with making these moves. They would still value young players and valuable second round picks. You could have signed Dumoulin for free in free agency in a couple of months lol.

They don’t need a Dman after a couple months . They need one now but won’t after Seigs and Hamilton are healthy ( especially with Casey and Nemec waiting for spots ) . They can’t afford to miss the playoffs so they are trying to do what’s reasonable to try to not miss. I can see the Devils go hard after Nelson / Rakel / RoR / Boeser / Marchand / Rantanen or anyone who might be slightly available. They will try to use Jacks LTIR room . Why else would they pay additionally for retention on Dumoulin ? Makes no sense unless they are big game hunting . EP40 to Devils E5

Dobson ? Ya don’t need him . Devils D stats are great . Their D and G are good . They need forward help and C depth in a massive way. After Jack and Nico , they have no real NHL calibre Cs . Haula is garbage . Dowling is a career AHL’er . Mercer is not a C . They need someone like RoR . Stop gap 2C , reakky good 3c . Plus a winger for Jack . Palat is not that and never will be .

I do agree we needed another dman. The problem I have with this is I don't think this should've costed a 2nd and a prospect. I would think a 3rd and prospect max. I think we could've done a lot better with a 2nd rounder but what do I know.

No retention on Soucy and he’s signed another year. Canucks have Willander coming in and need a spot. It’s SJ’s 3rd so probably the first pick in the 3rd round and a $3.25 million dollar cap dump. See Soucy this year for details, guys been a tire fire.

I agree with 95% of what you said.

But I would build my D around a young guy like Dobson over an unreliable guy like Dougie. They certainly need a 3C, but getting a 3C isn't very difficult to do. But, if they could get ROR and shed Palat in that same trade... that might make up for this objectively bad Dumo trade.

I'm not even trying to insult Hamilton. I just think he's unreliable to count on as your #1. He's only had 6 seasons where he played 70+ games. Out of 13. And his playoff history isn't exactly anything to write home about either. Mass majority is first and second round exits with Boston and Carolina lol. If I was NJ, I'd be shipping him out the second he's healthy and has another 50+ point season. Easier said than done though, since he has a NMC.
