Are they that banged up? I wouldn't be adding at all if I were Fitzgerald.

Just to reiterate, there is a financial component to making the playoffs vs. not. I don't think the mentality is to pack it in, especially with the veterans on the team.

And the Devils D is a bit banged up right now. Siegenthaler went down a few weeks back and Hamilton got hurt last game. Brett Pesce was playing on the left side to mixed results but can now move back to his strong side. Luke Hughes was getting PK time with Siegenthaler out, but now Dumoulin can absorb those minutes especially with Luke likely taking over PP1 with Hamilton out.

LHD: Hughes-Dillon-Dumoulin
RHD: Pesce-Kovacevic-Nemec-Casey
injured: Hamilton-Siegenthaler

They were talking on local radio about how NJ could do some shuffling of the chairs and looking at moving their 2nds for something that could help them out for next year.

But to make this type of deal for a UFA makes no sense.

Dumo has been the Ducks most consistent defenseman all year, they'll be worse off this season for sure. Bit of an overpayment maybe but still a good pickup for the Devils IMO. He probably re-signs for a couple seasons which would make it fair.

Doesn't change the overpayment but I do wonder if we buy a pick brokering a different rental trade to even the overall situation out. Great job by Anaheim they upgrade a 4th round pick to a 2nd and a decent bottom 6 prospect for the price of like $450k

He hasn't been our most consistent defenseman in months. LaCombe takes that title, easily.

I think we'll be slightly worse off in the short term, especially on things like the PK. But longterm it was to get reps for our young defensemen.

Not a bad deal for NJ, I think. He’s a seasoned Cup winning vet. You need that to win now, not draft picks
You also need your best player. Makes no sense for NJ unless they re-sign him. And even then they could have kept the 2nd and signed him/a similar guy in the off-season.

Probably some pressure from ownership to solidify their playoff position with injuries on the backend to get that first round playoff revenue.

I don't understand this move for the Devils tbh, they have enough middle-to-bottom 6 type defenseman, even with Siegs and now Dougie injured.

Roll with Nemec, Casey...

This is a team who has bounced back this season and is a strong group. They are definitely not going to just limp into the playoffs and accept a first round exit just because Hughes is out. The season is far from over for the rest of the team. Nemec and Casey are unproven rookies. This is the most basic of hockey moves.

Dougie Hamilton is out for at least a few weeks and Jonas Siegenthaler is on LTIR. Right now the top-4 of the defense is Luke Hughes, Brett Pesce, Brendan Dillon, and Johnny Kovacevic. NJ really needs a stabilizing vet to step in and hopefully keep the defense afloat until the playoffs.

Absolute no brainer pick up even though the prices are high.

Agree most on here aren't in reality they are playing arm chair gm on NHL 25. The Devils organization and the GM need to make the playoffs this season. We as fans also deserve playoff hockey as does the core of this team. A second round pick (which they had 3 of) and a prospect for a dman who is now pretty important with Siegs and Hamilton down is not a bad a price at all.

The retention piece leads me to believe this is the first of a few trades coming in the next 48 hours. I expect any move for a forward to have term on it can't see Fitz going pure rental there.

Honestly can't really believe people are questioning this. Fairly obvious given the circumstances. NHL 25 comments are totally valid. Good move to address a glaring problem and gives them obvious playoff D depth.

Bought for a fourth, sold for a second plus a few months later. Dumo was a great addition here, we will miss him.
Yeah, on top of Jack Hughes being out for the rest of the year... this deal is complete idiocy from New Jersey.

I'd get it if he still had a year left on his contract, but.... yeah. That's not really the case. This is such a weird trade. The Devils think they'll go on a playoff run without Jack.

New Jersey is doing this after helping retain salary on a guy yesterday. Does this organization know what they're doing?

Anaheim did extremely well with asset management.

I don't think this is the time for New Jersey to be overpaying for rentals.

I'll always love Dumoulin, but he's been firmly a third pairing guy for a while now. Not sure that overpaying for Cup experience is the move you make when your best player is out for the season.

Then again Dumoulin won the second of those Cups on a team that lost its #1 defenseman and replaced him with a 36 year-old with zero playoff experience...weirder things have happened.

If Hamilton and Siegenthaler are out for awhile then what's the point? I guess playoff experience would be good and we don't have a 1st anyway.

Hamilton is week to week. He will be back. And the point is you are IN a playoff spot. Not on the outside looking in. You act as a buyer. Unless sending a message to the players that the season is a wash is a better option. Everyone and their mother knows Fitz will address forward issues between now and tomorrow 3 PM. Not only that but he knows EXACTLY who he wants. He is not just picking names out of a hat lol.

Team has zero Cup or ECF chances without Jack. But whatever, a 1st or 2nd round loss and you hope to upset the Canes or Caps. Blue Jackets are 4 points back with 2 games in hand and Sens are 5 points back with 2 games in hand. Continued .500 play and this team misses the playoffs.

Verbeek needed to take away one of Cronin's veteran toys. Teams in a rebuild shouldn't be scratching Zellweger and Mintyukov to play guys like this. Mission accomplished.

NJ doesn't own their own first round pick. Dropping down and throwing your hands up would be dumb for a team that didn't make the playoffs last season. With an injured back end, it makes sense to give up a small piece and try to at least remain as competitive as you can, without going all in as buyers.

There are teams worse then the Devils this year that have won the Stanley Cup. If you make the playoffs anything can happen. People are talking as if we are on the outside looking in. We are a buyer until we are not. Meaning we are a playoff team until we are on the outside looking in.
