Speculation: NJ desperate for a high end 3c/decent 2c

Colton will probably be available if the Avs make another move. He's a good player but not a great fit for the Avs.
Bring him home.

Based on leverage (full NTC this year which I'm not sure he waives for any team besides his hometown devils he grew up rooting for) I'm not sure how high the price would get tho, if he isn't a great fit in Colorado

NJ has no cap to make any trade. The guys NJ would want to send out have trade protection. They will likely have to ride out this stretch until the break and presumably Hischier and Haula are back afterwards and the lineup looks the way it is supposed to.

He's so dynamic, he'd be a perfect fit for our system. He could slide to the wing if everyone's healthy (or Hughes could), but you need center depth to win cups. And it's not like he's overpaid at 9M - he's a 70-80+ point play driving center on the New York Islanders...
the question right now is whether LL is going make the big decision to retool by dealing Nelson and Palmieri (maybe Pelech?).blowing things up by sending NYI's dynamic player across the harbor is not even in the realm of possibility.

Colton Sissons for a 2nd?
Is Sissons a "high end" 3C anymore? The Preds are in bizarro-world this year, and sometimes don't even use Sissons at C, which is nuts. He has been a "very solid 3C" in the past, maintains a good FO%, and is adept at doing "all the little things" and subtly making his linemates better. This hasn't really translated into him being "high end", though? He's a solid 10-15/10-15 kind of player who will give you 55% on faceoffs, kill penalties, play physical enough, and generally complement the players around him. This is a good "3C" persona for some teams, but I don't think it is "high end" necessarily?

He is starting to resurrect his numbers lately, but overall it has been a writeoff season for him with the weird Brunette coaching style. Some team will get a nice bargain for him if they add him for this playoffs and next season. I do think that should be worth a 2nd to any contender who has that spot open. He's a good player. I just wouldn't describe him as "high end" for 3C or capable of slotting in at 2C. :dunno:

Colton for Mercer as a base, same cap

Lol the Devils aren’t giving up Mercer for Colton.

Colton is probably the best fit in this thread because he’s not too rich for the role (like Nelson or Norris), has some versatility and scoring ability (unlike a pure checking line C like Sissons) and the price from an asset standpoint wouldn’t be something ridiculous (like Mercer). And the Avs certainly seem in the mood to do deals at the moment. Moving Colton would give them flexibility to go after pieces that may fit better.

I feel like Compher or Copp kinda fit what you're looking for, but both have a higher cap hit than they're worth. Danault would be a perfect fit, but LA would be stupid to trade him.

Would NJ want Coleman back (if Calgary would even trade him idk)? Pinto from Ottawa?

If NJ wants a higher-end option and to reallocate some cap, I wonder how all sides would feel about a Hamilton for Norris or Hamilton for Couturier trade?

Compher is exactly what you want but idk if you want him at his cap number.

Compher. Idk what would be worth it from the devils though. We need upgrades too not secondary pieces

Detroit could, realistically, eat half cap retention on Compher. They'll have enough ELCs to do so.

But at $2.55M x 3, I'd wanna see something decent in return. NJD got a RHD they don't need that doesn't suck?

The Devils have about $ 2.5 million cap scace on the deadline if they don't make any roster moves between now and the trade deadline (according to All about the Jersey they have over $ 3.7 million cap space on the deadline).* They can also trade Tatar, Bastian or MacDermid (unlikely) to make more room to the cap.

* Those numbers will fluctuate on a daily basis due to the daily roster management.

Moving Barzal for a futures wouldn’t be the right move. Moving out Barzal in a massive hockey trade like what Carolina and Colorado just did would be the right way to go if they were to move him.

With the current injuries and having to carry extra players they allegedly have $300k in cap right now. I guess you could LTIR Haula but that defeats the purpose of the cap accrual as I understand it. You could send out a Bastian or Lazar in a trade but that barely fees up any cap and what player is coming back that has such a modest hit that moves the needle? Haula and Palat both have trade protection. I guess you could move Mercer but how does NJ improve with that sort of trade? If you trade him for Colton that seems like something of a lateral move. For a trade to work for NJ the team has to keep its roster intact except for the fourth line. Basically you can replace Lazar with a better center and hope to push Haula to the fourth line. That seems difficult to do right now. Maybe at the deadline as you've noted.

Why are some Devil fans in such a hurry to get rid of Mercer, injuries are piling up and they want to trade a dude who hasn't missed a single game in his 298 game NHL career away?

Ross Colton should be the target if they can get him without dealing Mercer.

Pavel Zacha was that man, but they were impatient.
Pavel played 6 full seasons in NJ.

Gotta give to get. We like Dawson, but he's not a core piece and if we need to upgrade and his salary is standing in the way, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

For Utica? Agreed, he’d be a nice veteran presence for the Comets third line! :D
If you want the cap hit down there sure ;)

Honestly he's not a bad player overpaid to be a 4C and if there is a need for a vet center . 8 goals 4 assists in 35 games in 11 games. His biggest problem is that 2nd year of that contract.

I just would like to see Pono or another young C play in his minutes because Penguins aren't going anywhere and we need to move Vets.

I understand the give to get mentality and I'm not opposed to dealing Mercer but I don't think you can upgrade on him for 4 million. Would be way better off keeping him and adding depth pieces for now. Moving off either Hamilton or Palat in the offseason for cap.
