Makes sense, and I can absolutely understand why that would be their stance. I just wonder if it wavers if a player the calibre of Tkachuk, at 24 years old, changes that tune or not. Fits in age wise with the core you've drafted imo.
Love him as a player and he is exactly what the Devils need, but I cannot see him agreeing to a deal with the Devils that would make sense for the Devils long term. If the Devils traded what it would take, plus the QO he has, he would be very difficult for the Devils to deal with from a contract perspective because he holds all the leverage.

I just do not see it as something that is realistic at this point.

This is an interesting idea I had after the season:

To NJ:
Matthew Tkachuk
Oliver Kylington

To CGY:
NJ's 2022 1st (~5th overall)
Damon Severson
Pavel Zacha

Plenty of smoke that Tkachuk may not want to re-sign in Calgary. Calgary gets a 2022 top 5 pick to compensate the loss of him and a very good top 4 RD in Severson who will likely be more than ok with re-signing in Western Canada (where he's from). NJ desperately needs a skilled, physical winger to play with Jack or Nico and he has ties to Fitzgerald. Flame away! (pun intended)

Where?

CGY wont be trading chucky for futures. It would be a top 6 center or right winger of the same Ilke. First, second and 3rd options are to re-sign him.

Don't the rules allow Calgary to be negotiating now with Tkachuk on a long term deal? NJ went for early no muss no fuss agreements with Hughes and Hischier. Presumably Calgary would do the same with Tkachuk? If he won't sign long term with Calgary, why would he do so in NJ absent some sort of massive overpay? If you can't get Tkachuk with a deal in place for him, it will obviously impact his trade value. To a contender he's still worth a first and a good prospect easily. To a NJ he's not a good trade acquisition without a contract.

hey bugs

look garland is a nice player. but he doesn't come with a cheap contract. if his production doesn't rebound to what it was with the yotes he is slightly overpaid, which dampers his trade value. smith had an impressive rookie season, but his second season hasn't been good so far. as long as he is playing on elc, he is cheap regardless.

so with the right fit on both sides and some small additions you could probably create a fair proposal with those two pieces. one team receiving a long term signed wing at his peak, the other receives cap savings and a potential second pairing puck moving d, who can also quarterback a pp unit, for their future.

now you added on one side the nj 2022 first round pick and on the other a third round pick. the devils pick will be a guaranteed top 10 selection, which by itself has much more trade value than garland and the 3rd combined. this is a looney tunes level proposal.
Garland literally just got traded for the 10th overall pick. He’s been Vancouver’s top 5v5 player all season and a Top 6 player with the same if not better “production” then the Yotes. You clearly only stat watch and haven’t seen him this season. The fact that you think he’s on an expensive contract is bonkers. He’s paid perfectly for what he is, a feisty, hardworking, 25 year old top six forward. Is a 1st+Smith for Garland+3rd an overpay? Maybe, but we have zero reason to trade him otherwise he’s locked up long term at a SOLID contract.

I would do Ty Smith for Conor Garland straight up. Both are overrated and underperforming.

If you think NJ will give up an unprotected first for Garland, that's hilarious.
Hahahaha. What’s hilarious is you thinking my Garland is overrated and underperforming. Are you blind or just haven’t watched a single Canucks game? He’s the Best 5v5 player on the roster  T.Smith straight up? YIKES lol
