This is an interesting idea I had after the season:

To NJ:
Matthew Tkachuk
Oliver Kylington

To CGY:
NJ's 2022 1st (~5th overall)
Damon Severson
Pavel Zacha

Plenty of smoke that Tkachuk may not want to re-sign in Calgary. Calgary gets a 2022 top 5 pick to compensate the loss of him and a very good top 4 RD in Severson who will likely be more than ok with re-signing in Western Canada (where he's from). NJ desperately needs a skilled, physical winger to play with Jack or Nico and he has ties to Fitzgerald. Flame away! (pun intended)

Terrible. Kylington is not a throw in nor do the Flames have the depth on the left side to lose him.
Take out Kylington.
Swap Severson for Holtz.

Then I think it's good.

So:
Tkachuk to NJ for Holtz, Zacha, 2022 1st.
Less terrible. If Tkachuk absolutely refused to re-sign, Holtz + 2022 1st would be a decent starting point. Would prefer Mercer. Or maybe like Hischier + 2nd for Tkachuk.

If Gaudreau leaves and Tkachuk does not want to resign, NJ's first and Holtz would be extremely attractive pieces.

People are really sleeping on Severson. He can carry a second pair or be a great compliment on a top pair. He’s really good

He can carry a rebuilding team? If Calgary looses Tkachuk they are 100% rebuilding so acquiring a rental in Severson makes zero sense. He would also play 3rd pair in Calgary as both Ras and Tanev are strictly better.

Your original trade is just really bad overall for Calgary, regardless of the direction the Flames go

There is no reason for the Flames to trade Kylington for Severson if they rebuild

Rest of packing is not enough for tkachuk. Start with 2022 AND 2023 1sts

Got it.

So...

To NJ: Tkachuk

To Calgary: Alex Holtz, 2022 1st round pick, Janne Kuokkanen
Would be tough to let go of Holtz and that high pick but you gotta give to get. I would consider doing this trade for sure. We would have the opportunity to draft a defensman with that pick but getting Tkachuk would be a huge add.

If Treliving trades Kylington I will personally find out where he lives, break in in the middle of the night, tie him down, shave his head, and tattoo MORON on his dome.

Got it.

Not super high on Holtz myself but that's probably relatively close.

I will never understand how low people value Tkachuk. You CANT win without players like him. When it comes to playoff hockey and the grind that comes along with it, its players like Tkachuk who put a team on top. Prime example , Corey Perry, Joe Pavelski.

anyone who is going to trade for Tkachuk is going to have to over pay massively.

Bad for Calgary.

How about T.Smith+2022 1st for Garland+3rd?

New Jersey isn't giving up any of Smith, Holtz, or our 2022 1st round pick in a trade for Garland.

Those are our 3 most valuable expendable pieces and they would only be used in a trade for a needle mover such as Tkachuk or DeBrincat. Not Conor Garland.

Yeah Holtz+a good first would be about as good of a package as could be expected for 1 year of Tkachuk.
Would love to add to Tkachuk for Mercer if this ended up being the case, he’s going to be really good.
