Why do the Sabres need more picks? Why trade him for less of a return than we bought him for? Why trade him when was a specific target for the team? We paid a 2nd for Malenstyn and Greenway is twice the player.

Buffalo need to extend good players, not trade them.

The offer in the op makes no sense.
Why would you trade him for less than you bought him for??

Well you bought 2 years of him.

In this case you'd be selling 1 year.

Most assets depreciate in value.

In this case that asset still holds value to the Sabres. So I'd guess they'd probably rather keep a useful player than trade him for a scratch off ticket. Now if the deadline rolls around and the Sabres are well out of the playoff race maybe they ship Greenway out for futures, but I can't blame Sabres fans for recoiling at decent roster players being shipped out for more middling futures.

Do you think Greenway is likely to resign?
You don't have to actually draft and develop the player. You can flip the asset down the line for a piece that fits your timeline.

Buffalo appears bad again this year.

So they have 3 options.

Buy
Hold
Sell

I get the thought of selling is bad but would you rather they try and buy further? or hold and likely lose most pending UFAs for nothing?

There is a real chance of him resigning. Both him and thompson go back to team USA U18 team

Its early in the year. Half their F are new and they have a new coach. There have been numerous team who turned it on in thr last 50 games after playing around .500.

Sell

If they are out near the deadline they could look to trade him then in a selkers market

It looks as though Sabres fans haven't watched their own team to know where they're sitting in the standings. I can't blame them after so many years of mediocrity, but it is pretty standard practice to trade expiring UFAs for picks... and standard to expect a 2nd or worse back for a third liner who isn't exactly lighting the world on fire so far this year.
as a devils fan i would say it is way too early to declare the devils as a deadline buyer or buffalo as a deadline seller. they might fight toe for toe for a playoff spot and won't have any interest in trading with each other. therefore i don't assume that buffalo would be willing to sell from their line up for futures.
so the offer would have to be something else for greenway. rhd was considered last year as a weakness for buffalo and the devils have currently 5 rhd, which could be deployed in the nhl. hamilton and pesce aren't getting traded and i just don't see that devils fan would be willing to trade either of kovacevic, nemec and casey.

i don't think it's the time for constructive trade talks between the two parties. once we are closer to the deadline and the teams know better where they stand this proposal could make more sense.

I don’t think anyone in buffalo will lose sleep over greenway walking in free agency (rather than getting an asset for him) at the cost of resigning him or him helping out. mid to lower tier UFAs walk all the time rather than being sold at the deadline

It's tough to guess what happens with Greenway and the Sabres. We have a ton of forwards in the pipeline and Greenway may want to test free agency or maybe he wants to stay closer to where he grew up. Very tough to guess what both parties are thinking.
I'd echo what others are saying, it's still too early to punt on the season. They've gotta this thing pointed in the right direction ASAP.
As for your general question I'd absolutely want us to be a buyer moving forward and lean into it a bit more as our acquisitions have been more depth/role guys.

Sabres have all sorts of "talented" players. Few of them are 6'6", very strong, and play a sound defensive game. If anything, Sabres need another guy like him, or even better, a Foligno, to make them tougher to play against, and conduct themselves like pros.

The only way that Sabres should trade this upstate NY'er is if he makes it known he will not re-sign with the team, or has crazy salary demands. In that case, they do a TDL deal, if, and only if, they are out of the playoffs. I haven't given up on the Sabres yet, even though it looks bad right now.

It's too early to give up on any team. A three game winning streak and Buffalo is right back in the hunt. They can worry about punting on the season if they are still struggling close to the trade deadline.

Yes trade one of our competent vets for a pick that we are hoping maybe we can turn into an even younger player, this will surely fix Buffalo.

Keep trying to resign Greenway. If he doesn't resign, just let him walk. We won't miss the 2nd round pick. We have a huge amount of other assets we can sell for players, most of which have more value than a 2nd round pick.

No interest in this trade but this thread is driving me nuts

Re-sign = a player re-signs with their original team. Example: I sure hope Greenway re-signs in Buffalo
Resign = To quit, example I could work here anymore, so I had to resign my position.

These two things mean opposite things and yet people use them interchangeably.

The value on the trade is just fine.......IF:
1.) The Sabres are out of the playoff race
2.) Greenway expresses that he will not re-sign with the Sabres

I do genuinely hope that Greenway re-ups with us.
