Nintendo Switch #5

One thing to note with this direct is the day one Third Party Support. Far more support then the Nintendo Switch announcement back in the day. It's a great sign for things to come.

Yeah, I'll be passing on the Switch 2 for a while. Nothing there that makes me feel like I need or should buy a Switch 2 on day one, or anytime soon after it releases.

Perhaps we will get another Switch 2 direct next month where they will announce more launch titles or titles that will launch within the window of release. I really hope so.

Nintendo shifted production to Vietnam to avoid tariffs and now Vietnam is being tariffed higher than China. Have to think that price might be going up for US, but places like Amazon etc do have price guarantees at least.

Lots of bad news out of this tbh, especially if you're in Japan. Region locked console, more expensive games, and that game card stuff are all bad looks. If they did this 10 years ago they'd have been tarred and feathered like the XB1 was.

Overall a solid presentation from Nintendo. Some random thoughts:

-Mario Kart World does look amazing, curious to see how the balancing for 24 players will work out.(But that one battle royale-ish modes sounded pretty decent at least)
-You have to pay for the Switch 2 introduction game. Really? Include it with the NSO membership at least.
-Congrats Nintendo, welcome to gaming online from 20 years ago, heh.
-I like how the new dock has a built in fan and LAN. I like that they recognize that some people are gonna want to have high FPS preference.
-Interesting to see Nintendo seemingly embracing mouse controls so earnestly. Do Japanese people typically play on a desk or something?
-Decent selection of third party games, I'm curious to see how everything will pan out long term.
-I'm actually surprised to see the Gamecube on NSO. I figured Nintendo would've preferred to continue to just make remasters. (Unlike N64 games, I think the Gamecube had proper games, and not just experimental/primitive stuff like on the N64)

I see nothing making me run out and buy a Switch 2 on day one. I also am still somewhat serious about a 'Switch-less' version that's just a box that I can put on my desk, since I will not use the portability feature 99 percent of the time.

But I think if you're a Nintendo fan you should be pretty happy, I hope the pricing and compatibility stuff will be mostly fair.(Also the hardware itself having no major issues, *cough* joycon drift *cough*)

I kinda sped through the direct. Game chat at first made me laugh because party chat is in no way innovative for any of the big console developers aside from Nintendo (I wasn't legally allowed to drink when Xbox live came out), but the camera feed and live game streaming to friends was interesting, but Nintendo shoots itself in the foot once again. How many people are legitimately going to buy a separate webcam for their console? Why not make that an option but also include a built in camera? The tech can't be that hard to incorporate given how every smart phone on earth has them and has had them for over a decade now.

Glad to see Fire Emblem is part of the GameCube future lineup. Never finished it, didn't feel like paying 140 dollars for a used copy. There's a few others I've never played that I'd be down to try. Also I played the absolute shit out of Soul Calibur 2 with my brother back in the day so we're probably gonna run it back eventually.

A number of these third party titles tips off that this is going to be a (relatively) strong console but I'm still apprehensive about performance on some of these. Like Cyberpunk can be played on medium settings on a low end handheld PC so how closely did they replicate that computing power? I heard Civ 7 runs like absolute shit on Switch so I guess we'll see. I kind of want to pre-order this thing but I'm really hoping it's the technological leap they presented today.

Interesting that there wasn't a single new Mario launch title. I would've guessed they'd have something ready to go even if Wonder came out not too long ago.

Still no complaints about the device itself for the time being. We'll see how temp control and battery life actually works with these heavier titles.

So it's pretty much a portable PS4 with $80 games, DLSS and mouse controls. Steam Deck stills seems like the best value, considering you can also play upgraded Switch 1 games on it.

Yeah this part made me laugh.

The devs cooked this and thought "this is gonna change things!" despite pretty much every platform having established voice/party chat for the better part of 2 decades now.

The pricing is hilarious.

80 bucks for games. You can even get a PS5 cheaper than the Switch 2. The fanboys will eat everything Nintendo throws at them though.

Showing off a new Gamecube controller with no Smash announcement is a crime. Like people are going to buy one to play Path of Radiance c’mon guys we all know what series this controller is built for.

Also, now that I think about it, 256 GB of internal storage is kinda inadequate if the system needs all the game data internally.

I suppose you do have the fastest load times that are possible that way though. But still, sheesh.

So I was wrong about Sakurai working on a Kid Icarus game, it's a Kirby game.

But I love that he name has such gravity that it's the only Nintendo game where they make it clear who is directing. Sakurai is the GOAT.

So the Switch 2 game carts are basically a return to the N64 days. Producing them is expensive so the price of games will be higher than the competition.

It's even worse for people that like to have physical copies as the games will most likely require partial or complete downloads because they will cheapen out and use smaller carts.

I know that a lot of people are excited but this really is a step backwards for consumers.
