right now jones ainec
he's looked fantastic in every area, playing much faster, shown a ton of confidence on the puck
this is nothing at all against nils. i do think expectations for a lot of people were a little too high and not considering all the changes he was facing making the jump. off the ice brings enough changes...but the smaller surface and more physical game make play so much faster esp for a smaller d. he's playing tentative because he's still figuring things out over here. i know he's beloved because he was a 1st rounder and has the special one timer but overall he's definitely swimming a bit. that could certainly change fast, and i still think he's a phenom prospect...there's nothing wrong if he takes a little time in hfd.
i do think a lot of this debate / preference for nils comes from his pedigree / highlight reel which isn't unreasonable to feel excited about. but what i feel like really doesn't get enough appreciation is the progression jones has been on. going back to before he was drafted the jumps he's made and the time he's needed to become a high end player at each level is not common.
i don't think where things stand today is terribly meaningful in the grand scheme of things though. just because ones in the lineup day one doesn't mean it won't be the other a month later, or both etc
