Just in perspective, the SHL is a low scoring league so NL’s 15 pts in 20 games put him at 20th overall in scoring (all skaters).

I know Lundqvist is a 2 way guy, and we all go gaga over his point production, how's his defensive play coming along? Has his defensive game also progressed similar to how his offensive game has?

A 2-way defenseman means a defenseman who is good both offensively and defensively. Lundkvist takes risks but defensively he has definitely improved. His gap-control is probably the best I've seen by a young Swedish D-man in the SHL in recent years except for Dahlin. He's not the type of D-man who delivers bone-crushing hits, but his skating ability (which is superb) gives him the time to get back in position.

He is probably 2 years away from making an impact in the NHL, but he's just 19 years old.

Poor man’s Lidstrom? I’d even take destitute man’s Lidstrom lol.

A destitute man's Lidstrom is better than a Gates man's most other defensemen.
We’re incredibly lucky to have watched him, Sundin, Lindros, Modano, Datsyuk, Bure, Kovalev, Hossa, Blake, Hasek, Roy, Thornton, Fedorov, Selanne, Jagr, Hull, Roenick, Robitaille, Naslund, Alfredsson and even TGO ... when they were rocking it. Combine that with living in the Crosby / OV and McDavid era ... that’s a lot of talent and a lot of hockey.

I'm actually 15 years old so I haven't watched those guys. Just kidding. I'm 33 and I've been watching since 2000. I still have nostalgia with some of those guys and teams. Even lesser-known guys like Milan Hejduk.

Oh man — remember the Tanguay - Forsberg - Hejduk line? That was sick. I’m 31 and have bee following since 2000 as well. Buddies of mine sold me on Pavel Bure when I was in Florida, so I started watching Cats games and fell in love with the sport.

If Lundkvist continues his pace, even with the WJC, he would finish the season as the top U20 point producing defenseman ever in the SHL.

Do you know why he busted?
Quite slow on the skates, not overly technical. A good solid player that can do well in PP but nothing spectacular about him, probably NHL is too fast for his skating. Numbers also rather inflated that specific junior year from playing in one of the best teams offensively the SHL has seen in recent years (loads of future NHL'ers, KHL returns etc.).

It was more about his lack of strength and willingness to battle than his skills.

It's also a more accurate comparison if you look at D-men in their D+2 season.

David Rundblad is the only one with a higher PPG average but he was an early birthday (October) and played 90% of the season at age 20, while Lundkvist will be 19 this whole season)

However, I would fully expect that if things keep going the way they're going, the potential return (or at least the cost savings for the Rangers) could see a substantial swing. That's a good thing --- and speaks to the ability to trade from a position of strength when the right opportunity presents itself.

If you ask me, (and I know, no one is) the timing should be perfect and think Brady will be the one to go, somewhere down the line. Staal will have retired, and Brady with his decently low salary (again, in 2 yrs time with salaries skyrocketing) and thinking Brady should still get better.......and certainly has value throughout the league and spots opening up because of Seattle.

All we have to hope for is 2 of all of those LD's, to be deemed ready and we will be in business. Sorry Brady.

Funny tidbit regarding that D table. I was in the Army on the same company with Peter Andersson in Karlstad in 1984-1985. We had some mutual drills/wargames with Ulf Samuelson and Tomas Sandström that were placed in Falun. That was a long time ago.

Luleå have taken like 30 of the last 34 pts. Given up 11 goals in the last 11 games, OTOH just scored 33. Tight games and they give nothing away.

One thing though, Nils is not dominating in any way. But playing really good for a U20 player. However, don’t expect to see a kid that is flyin all over the ice and being a threat with his speed. He is playing a calm and collected game. Not a ton of finesse.
