Team needs to upgrade defence and doesn't have any cap dumps. He has value while being expendable from the roster and removes money from the cap unlike a trade of strictly futures.

Like Rowlet said, we aren't giving up on him so much as needing to improve defense and having very limited ways to accomplish that without moving someone out. We also have to consider our upcoming UFAs. I can't imagine they want to let Suter walk. A year after that, Garland is up.

At some point, we have to cut someone loose. Our forward depth is a lot better than defense, which is basically nonexistent. So Hoglander's the obvious choice.

He scored 24 EV goals last year in a depth role, it's pretty clear he has some offense to his game, he just doesn't seem to mesh very well with Tocchet.

I think he'd do great on a team with a bit more room to free wheel.

It was clearly an outlier season for him based on his insane shooting percentage. His biggest problem is he's not defensively responsible enough to be trusted in the bottom 6 and not talented enough to be a full time top 6 guy

they need a bonafide top 4 RHD. Borgen is definitely a good player, but Hoglander is better packaged with another asset to acquire a player that can shoulder a heavier load. not to say Borgen cannot be that guy, just not that calvary that Vancouver needs in the back to emerge out of the west. I have a feeling everyone's gonna hate this. But it seems like an outside the box way of solving some problems for both teams.





For Vancouver:

Give up a good young scoring forward and kind of a fan favourite, but they absolutely cannot keep plowing forward with the abysmal defense corps they have. Big risk taking on that contract, but it's smaller than what Zadorov got, and at his best...Graves can be a better defenceman as well. Just hasn't found any sort of fit with either of Letang/Karlsson and makes him the odd man out there. He's exactly the sort of defenceman that Tocchet/Foote have found success with. Guys who are big and mobile but need to calm down and simplify their game to get the most out of.

Also gaining a key trade chip to make further upgrades, as that Pittsburgh 2nd has the potential to be a very good one, not that far off from scooping up those "1st round fallers" range. Moving it further down the road even, might actually make it more valuable.

Poulin kinda sucks, but backfills the forward depth spot, and a guy that Rutherford might be attached to.

St. Ivany, i'm not sure if it's even necessary, but it'd be convenient to add another layer of RH shooting defensive depth. Hardly a dealbreaker either way.



For Pittsburgh:

I mean, they unload that Ryan Graves mistake contract. That's huge for cap flexibility. Trying to retool again, it gives them a lot of different options.

Dubas has notably had interest in Hoglander, dating back to his Toronto days if i recall correctly. He's a total Dubas player. He's also be a really interesting addition to the Penguins roster in that he's a guy who can actually score primarily from the Bottom-6. But with that tantalizing upside that he could find something with either Croz or Geno. Chemistry is a weird beast and you never really know. He's got the puck skills to do even more than he has.

Desharnais goes back as more or less a cap dump. Just hasn't worked out right in Vancouver. Every now and then he looks like a real player, but then he's a bonehead. Maybe Sullivan will like him. But mostly just about balancing out the cap numbers.

I find it interesting that whenever the Canucks struggle Dhaliwal suddenly gets all these trade rumours.

Having flash back to the 80's in Edmonton when Glen Sather would send messages to his via either Terry Jones or Jim Matthieson to tell a player to get a move on. Both writer mentioned in different books they wrote of some of the stuff Sather did to play games with players

Dhaliwal is a joke. He's one of the biggest clowns in the industry. Somebody needs to kick that pulpit out from underneath him. Don Taylor even called him out a while ago for fabricating shit.

People keep going on about how Hoglander is in Tocchet's doghouse and how he doesn't like Hoglander. Why do you think that is? Its not because Tocchet is unprofessional. It's because of the reasons I listed. . Hoglandrr is poor defensively and not skilled enough to be in the top y. If he was he would have seen topb6 duty while Boeser and Miller were out.

I don't at all get the Caps rumors and even if I did that proposed package is way too much. If this was in the summer when he was still thought of in the same tier as McMichael/Protas/Lapierre then I would get it but they've all completely passed him. Caps have already taken their swings on middel 6ers with upside (McMichael, Protas, PLD, Mangiapane) and they've all paid off big time, no need to make another in-season

Yeah I said ‘speculation’ for a reason. And the package does seem too large. Reason for posting was to hopefully get some info on Chesley. Canucks board often talks about Iorio but maybe Chesley has more upside.
