A tier below a guy like Marner if he hits UFA but what would interested teams be looking at a contract for Nikolaj Ehlers in the offseason.

Jets have lots of cap space so they can absolutely retain him and offer the 8th year as well but will his price maybe be too high?

Having an excellent season and just turned 29. Very consistent as well as always gets into that 25G + 35A range but in shortened seasons (and this full season as well) he has flirted with PPG stats.

There are a number of other LW on the market this offseason but he would be at the top of the list for a scoring LW.

If Marner is expected to get 14M, and Rantanen just got 12M, I see Ehlers getting 10M. 7x10M. The cap going up gives everyone cap space to burn, and the UFA prices are going to go crazy as a result. This is especially true given they expect the cap to rise 10M a year for the next three.

What team needs a top 6 winger?
What team has at least 8 million in space?

I'd think he gets 8 x 8 in WPG

He gets 7 x 9 on a bubble team that needs an offensive punch to help push them into playoffs?

I don't see the 5 or 6 contending teams being able to fit him.

Carolina.
Carolina.

What team has been trying to solve top line LW for a couple of seasons via deadline deals?

Carolina.

The only debate I see for Carolina is if both Marner and Ehlers get to July 1, who do they think they should prioritize?

I think he gets 9 maybe even 10

marner and ehlers are the two best free agents available. Whoever misses out on Marner is going to turn around up the bidding for ehlers

If Carolina wants to get him and take themselves out of the Marner race so Sabres odd's go up lol. I wouldn't mind him in buffalo but Peterka probably has to go to get him.

If he's a no show again this playoffs, the Jets should let him walk. Ehlers never shows up in the playoffs. They tried trading him last year but no takers.

i think it'll be mentioned in this thread alot so i'll say this now
but please dont call a top line winger a "top 6 winger"
Top 6 implies that his overall impact puts him in maaaybe a 1st line role or well suited for a second line role.... a player who would be best on a second line but can fill in for top line duties...
Ehlers it a top line winger. period.

should a player that never hit 70 points really get double digits? entering his 30s too

Tkachuk plays on Panthers 2nd line and miles better than Ehlers. What's the big deal?
When you have a balanced team, you can have a 2nd liner on 1st line and vica versa.

That's inconsequential in a UFA market. He's a free top line winger and there will be multiple teams with both the need and the cap space for such a player. I don't know if he'll hit double digits but it's certainly possible.

I'd guess it will probably come down to Ehler's choosing between a basement team with loads of cap space and trying to take the next step willing to offer double digits vs a much more attractive competitive team offering less because they have a cap structure/budget to maintain.

The Canucks will be in on him if they don't retain Boeser. Not sure we will have the upper hand on a southern team but that'll drive the price up. Is he really in his 30's? Wow.

The Ehlers issue in Winnipeg is that he has never been a top line winger, and likely never will be as long as Connor and Vilardi are around. Ehlers hasn’t really played with Scheif for whatever reason, and he just got PP1 time for the first time this year. He can’t be happy about his usage, so I bet he goes to the highest bidder. He’s a great guy but the franchise hasn’t given him much reason to stay, like trading away his best buddy (Laine).

And then there’s the whole playoff ghost thing, which he really needs to dispel this year. Somebody will pay him, and I’ll be happy for the guy.

yeah but that's a reflection of a teams depth
but when talking about a player in general, not in the context of any team... a player as a ufa, you should label him correctly.

First line player
middle six player
second line player
tweener or middle six player,
3rd liner
bottom sixer
4th liner.

in that order
