Player Discussion Nick Suzuki Game Winning Goals Edition

Yes, players CAN be better? Youre making things up because of an angle you have.
What angle? I've said Nick Suzuki has been our best player every year. The guy you said was Mike Hoffman had an awesome first half. Our best player. But this gets said and a few of you guys have a stroke. "It's beyond debate!" I mean, get out of here with this stupid shit.

I dunno LG... I remember you digging in heels pretty heavily trying to downplay both Suzuki's level of play and 1C potential not that long ago.

The level we're seeing today was very projectable back then, just as predictable as CC scoring 40+ eventually.

It's ok to admit you were wrong, we all miss the mark sometimes!

My belief with Suzuki was the he had a 90 point ceiling. All things going for him, that's where he could get to. But he hadn't done enough to warrant being called a number one. I said if he wanted to be called one, he had to step up and do it. Second half of last year, he did.

Too many people had said he was already there. He wasn't. People freaked out. Sorry but he wasn't there. First half of last year he palyed okay... not great but not bad. Same as usual. But then he leveled up. Went parabolic. To me, I'd seen enough. Now it's undeniable. There's the odd person on the boards who denies it but he's proven it. Legit number one.

I think Nick will surpass the ceiling I had for him. I think he'll hit 100 next year. At no point did I ever see him being as good as he was in the last two months of this season and last. He's the best player in the league right now. Now... he's always been streaky but his 'colder' stretches are shorter and he still manages points even when not playing at his best but his hot streaks are Kucherov-like. No, I never saw him with that kind of ceiling. But I don't think anyone did. If he could play this way all the way through next season... Don't worry, I'll be here to say that I never foresaw that.

As for Cole, I still believe. Dude has a load of talent. But next year I will put down the same thing I did with Nick two seasons ago - if he's going to be at that next level he has to show it. He's a legit first liner, but I think he can - and should - exceed this. Injuries have gotten in the way but I think he should be a 50 goal man. We will see.

Excellent strawman. Never change.
"But it's beyond debate!!!! You can't believe this!"

Nick Suzuki has been our best player for several years now. The only player who's been as good or better has been Caufield and it's only happened in stretches - not seasons. I've never disputed this.

My arguments for Caufield have always been future based. This is the first real healthy season he's had. I still think he's got the potential for 50+ goal years. His best years are ahead.

As for Suzuki, I felt his ceiling with good teammates would be around 90 points. He might even do that this year. I would never have predicted him being as good as he was down the stretch last year or this year. And I don't think anyone here would either. If you have, please show me.

Suzuki will probably exceed the ceiling I had set. If he's doing 90 now (and he will probably hit that) then he might get to 100 next season. We'll see. That side of the equation I think will exceed my expectations. As for CC, I'll wait until next season before I change my mind. Hopefully a full healthy year one year removed from his shoulder issues. I'll put him down for fifty. We'll see. I think I've underestimated Suzuki (we'll see what he does next year) and I may have overestimated Caufield... but I'm not ready to change my mind yet. He's tracking ahead of where Suzuki was a couple of years ago and I think next year he'll blow it up. But we'll see.
Suzuki always gets underestimated.

He is also an extremely good goalscorer. Only, as a C, he doesn't shoot enough. I'd even argue that he needs to be a little more selfish to be even less predictable and, believe it or not, more effective.

Don't forget that Suzuki also scored 33 goals last year on 185 shots for an 17.8 shooting percentage.

This year, if he gets to 185 shots again by season's end, up from his current 158 shots (he'd need to shoot more, period), even with a lower shooting percentage for the year (16.5%),he'd score 30 goals again (30 on the nose).

Suzuki's scoring prowess is underestimated. He's aPPG C that will score 30 goals regularly, IMO, especially with an actual 2nd line when we get a genuine 2C and also add Demidov.

Let's just say that Suzuki doesn't need to be embarrassed in Cole Caufield's company when it comes to goal scoring.

I’d say Suzuki’s shot is outstanding. I’ve been saying he should shoot more for years. It’s interesting because I took a look at his shot numbers a little while ago expecting that he’d been shooting more but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Pucks are simply going in at a higher rate recently.

The PP will be insane next year. Demidov, Cc and Laine can all shoot really well. If Hutson can improve his shot it could become the best PP in the league.

If you're talking about ten game samples to see if the shooting percentage is higher, I don't know where to get that info other than doing the work myself game by game.

For the year, though, the shot totals are down compared to last season and so is the shooting percentage, although not by a huge amount (a little more than 1%).

Slick Nick's Wrister is something
else, but, after watching Demidov's third goal in the playoffs for the Gagarin Cup, not close to the Russian player's Wrister!

That's saying a lot seeing how good Suzuki's shot is...

It’s the peaks and valleys of the season. His shooting percentage was 13.5 before 4 Nations and it’s been 25 percent since. For the year he’s at 16.5. Well within the normal range.

I agree his shot is awesome. I just wished he used it more.

Edit: took a look at his shooting numbers. He averaged 167/82 before and 190/82 after. Not a huge bump, but his shot numbers are up 13 percent.
