Player Discussion Nick Suzuki Game Winning Goals Edition

Yeah somehow people still find ways to underrate Suzuki. Hes on the level of Barkov. Hes just under the top 5 of centers. Hes a gamebreaker.

right now, theres no contest as to who is the better player between Lane and Nick.
Yup. As much as we're gushing about him I think he's still being underrated because this season is being treated like it's his ceiling. The idea seems to be that he's leveled up from a 60P guy to a 70-80P guy who might flirt with 90P occasionally, but the way I see it is that he's currently on a 90P pace with his linemates pacing for 51P and 70P while having Selke-level defensive upside and all the intangibles you could ever ask for.

I love Slaf and Cole but they're not Rantanen, Stone, Reinhart, Pastrnak, or Kucherov. We've never seen Suzuki with a true top-flight winger and he'll end up breaking into that 90-100 point range with Demidov. All this "we need a 1C above Suzuki" stuff we're still seeing is just silliness. No shit we'd be a better team if we had McDavid 1C and Suzuki 2C but that's never happening. Nick is the guy and we should be thrilled about that. There are five guys on the planet clearly better (and one is Matthews who's never proven it in the playoffs) and he's competitive with anyone you'd put in that next tier below the generational/superstar talents. Like, people are just reflexively putting Brayden Point in a tier above him. Do we think Nick would struggle to hit 95P if he played with Kucherov? There's this impulse to downplay him to not look like a "homer" but the NHL media consensus is that f***ing Scheifele is better than Suzuki so who cares what the main boards or Sportsnet thinks.

It's not like the Crosby-Malkin Penguins are the only model for a cup winner. This is a league where teams won cups with Eric Staal, O'Reilly, and Kuznetsov as their 1Cs and we're nervous about trying to compete with a guy who's putting himself in the Toews, Barkov, Eichel, Getzlaf, Point Bergeron, Kopitar category? It's like having a super hot girlfriend who loves you, makes a lot of money, is a great cook, smart, funny, doesn't make you watch reality TV etc. and bitching that you're not dating Sydney Sweeney. Stupid.

This is the top 5 skaters by Average GameScore. In the month of March. It's minimum 10 games played.

Suzuki improved his skating! Ranked 4th.

I doubt he will take a game off. He doesn't look injured, and I don't think he'll want to break his ironman streak.
We’ve seen how a break can rejuvenate him. Doubt he cares more about the ironman streak than being better rested for playoffs. Of course that depends how much time off we will have after the last game.

4-nations faceoff gave him 2 weeks of rest. Not playing the last game or last 2 games will only give him 1-3 days of rest, so not much. The games will also be at home, so he won't even need to travel.

Suzuki has been red hot, going to long without playing a game could cool him down, which is not what we want.

Most likely he will play the last 2 games, but get lesser minutes than usual, and players who are more banged up like Anderson and Gallagher will be the one getting rest.

Top 10 LD. See my list. Hes very close if hes not in.

Get over it, you were wrong on him, I was too.
There’s nothing to get over. Very good player. Solid 2nd pair guy. I didn’t like him much when he was drafted, but he’s exceeded my expectations, it doesn’t mean I have to over correct my analysis. He’s ideally a 2nd pair. Hutson/Reinbacher hopefully round out the number 1 pair.

You said you’re not sure if Hutson is better Lolol. You might want to reconsider that.

Im still not sure. What makes you believe hes a 2nd pair D? He produces as much as top pair Ds at 5v5 in his three years here. His defensive ability is almost unmatched and hes crazy physical now.

I find defensively he’s a bit overrated tbh. I see him out of position quite often. The offense just isn’t gonna be there long term. I mean he can play on the first pair, but I don’t think it’s ideal.

Martin St Louis himself said rest is our biggest weapon right now and we need to use it. You're also contradicting yourself. So one game isn't a lot of rest, but one game can cool him down. Other teams frequently rest their best players in a similar position.

He's made very similar mistakes to Matheson but the other team just didn't capitalize on them. Not to say that he's worse than Matheson, but he's ideally a #3 dman and nowhere near a top 10 dman at his spot.

No, not close. I mean if you can’t tell that Hutson is miles ahead of him in overall impact than there isn’t much else to discuss IMO

Having rewatched the remarkable highlights of the game that saved our season and the post game interview with Marc Denis.
I've decided to rename our Captain "Next Level Nick" because all he does is graduate to the next level every season.
