Ritchie is just a bad fit. He is not able to handle M & M's creativity/edge work. He has to be a 3rd option or else they're playing a man disadvantage. Create space? How do you do that when you're behind the play?
Thing is, Marner and Matthews don't (or at least shouldn't) need another wheel to help them drive that lines play. They had Thornton for plenty of 5v5 minutes and each guy had monster seasons.
Ritchie just needs to be a big bodied guy to pick up their garbage in front of the net to get some goals. At the very least deserves to see how he fairs in that role for more than a few games now that Matthews is back to playing
