WHAT A POST

Bryan Marchment was a scary player to watch because he would hit to kill and it didn't matter if the opponent was in a vulnerable position or not. I would always cringe everytime he went low knee on knee on someone, or when the player had their back turned to him against the boards. The one thing about him he would normally back the cheap shot up by scrapping.
After the head, the knee has to be the biggest no go and he did it regularly. He was an Avs rental and it was a relief for me he didn't crippled anyone.

Can't blame Doug Weight.

I'd say Scott Stevens was worse........

.........he wanted to end your career.

He'd go out of his way to hurt you.

Pure trash.
Yet those hits weren't illegal or suspendable at the time. He wasn't doing anything "wrong" within the rules of the game, which is something the NHL has to live with.

As an Avs fan I wasn't a big Stevens fan, going back to the 2001 cup, but what can you say? If the league said he wasn't doing anything wrong, why would he stop doing what he's doing, if its helping his team win games, and he's being offered big time contracts (at the time) to do what he's doing?

It's amazing how 20-25 years ago seeing guys getting concussed on ice was acceptable, to today talking about CTE/mental heath/drug & painkiller addiction, etc. Those days weren't that long ago.

Who in their right mind thought concusions were fine, and didn't have any long term negative effects? Was the medical community that uneducated? I don't think so. I saw a buddy of mine when I was probably 12-14 wipe out snowboarding and get a conucssion on a starter hill at a small little ski hill, puking his guts out and stumbling around like he was drunk. It was scary. But the NHL was allowing players to skate into each other with headshots at 25+kmh like it was nothing, and pretend they didn't know better at the time.

Mark Messier, Claude Lemieux, Todd Bertuzzi, Milan Lucic and Sean Avery were dirty players. Also Pat Kaleta (Sabres) was always looking for the cheapshot and deserves a mention here.

I'd say there aren't as much cheapshot artist in this league right now than there were 1990 to 2010. The players we call cheapshot artist in 2025 wouldn't hardly been mentioned as cheapshot artists in 1990 to 2010.

Ryan Hartman has done some stupid shit on the ice. But he's nowhere near the "dirtiness" some of the players mentioned above. His biggest flaw is when he loses his temper, then he does stupid & dangerous things on the ice. Thats no excuse, he should've been suspended for the rest of the season for that play vs. Ottawa. But I don't think that he starts a game with the thought: "Today I'm gonna injure someone!". I belive some of the goons from the 90ies did step on the ice with that thought excactly.

Surprised not to see much mention of Nick Cousins here. Guy is such a coward to boot after his dirty shots. Duncan Keith was dirty as hell at times too
Keith getting mad at Cooke and destroying him on the same shift was a great sight

Cooke hits him high he takes the number and takes an absolute run

Keith is a good pick. I think it was Don Cherry who put together a highlight reel of Keith repeatedly using his stick as a weapon. Definitely an under the radar dirty player.

Forgotten over the years, but the dirtiest player on the old school Broad Street Bullies was Ed Van Impe.
Dangerous with the stick. Cheap shot artist. Spot Picker. Hit and run merchant. Never answered the bell for any of his shit.
Perhaps coincidentally, he career began to wane as soon as the 3rd man in rule came into effect and he started having to fight his own battles.

Did Bertuzzi have a history other than that one hit? I mean, I'm not saying it's by anyway forgivable but I don't remember him having a long history, could be wrong.

Also, people laying out a cheap shot artist will always be heroes even if they are dishing out one themselves.

What is this? Nothing to see here, just a good ol' Canadian boy making a strong Hockey play.

But it's only one time, so not a big deal. Not like he has a bizarre fetish with other men's nuts or anything.

...Milan Lucic at "practice"... :biglaugh:

I get that they were "legal" hits back then, but he seemed to take great pleasure in hurting people.

Also, full disclosure: I have lived with TBI's for the last 50 years. It started off very young with a couple of "kid-related' injuries, then on to hockey ones, then motocross, and finally ending up with Muay Thai. Toward the end of my Muay Thai days, I would be knocked out by a glancing blow wearing headgear.

It's left me with challenges, no doubt. Intrusive thoughts being the main one. But, I've learned to live with it and feel lucky that it's not the "bad" intrusive thoughts that some poor souls suffer with.
