So then you're in agreement that a grassroots approach for hockey doesn't guarantee the sport will ever become popular in the US... since about 20 million play soccer and it's still a niche sport... while even less play hockey with around 3 million.
I compare hockey to this. No matter how exciting Cricket might be, if we had a team here in MTL in a new league, no way i'd watch a second of it cuz i never was introduced to this game as a kid or now. I can't relate to it. so who cares!
Same in US. most of the ratings we get are from 20% of the whole US. (just the northeast mostly) who grew up with the game. We don't get the other 80% tuning in cuz they have no idea what Ice is or skates, or even a puck is. They don't know what offside is, icing, etc. They can't relate to it like we can.. They have 90 deg heat and sunshine all yr long. They've never seen snow or a hockey stick before. So that's why we'll never touch the NBA in ratings cuz their ratings come from 100% of the country, whereas hockey is about 25% of the country. We've been playing shorthanded our whole life.
No matter how exciting hockey is with the fights, saves, powerplays, etc.. americans don't see the same things we see.
Just like if cricket came to the US, no matter how exciting it might be, we wouldn't care less about cricket, just like 80% of americans couldn't care less about hockey.
and also, we're very much shorthanded cuz we lose most of the immigrants. There are close to 100 million immigrants and African Americans combined in the US. 99% of african americans and maybe 90% of hispanics are not watching hockey. Neither are most Asians. so hockey is only getting mostly white fans..
That is my opinion on why hockey will never be a top 3 sport in the US
